Industrial Action, Dellwood School Closes Early
[Updated] Teachers at Dellwood “engaged in industrial action short of a strike that led to the interruption of classroom instruction and early dismissal of students from the school,” the Ministry of Education has confirmed,
A Ministry spokesperson said, “Teachers at Dellwood Middle school today engaged in industrial action short of a strike that led to the interruption of classroom instruction and early dismissal of students from the school.
“The Department of Education has reached out to the BUT and the Department of Labour Relations to bring an immediate resolution to the action taken by the teachers.
“The action taken today has unfortunately hindered the student’s learning at Dellwood and we are working to resolve the situation. The department will issue a notice regarding when the school will reopen.”
Update 7:03pm: A Union spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Union of Teachers would like to provide some context to the reports that Teachers and staff at the Dellwood Middle School [DMS] engaged in industrial action which led to the school being closed and students being sent home today.
“The action was triggered and informed by the sudden termination of two long-term substitute teachers who had been contracted to be at DMS until March 27, 2020. Staff were outraged at the strain this shocking and unwarranted early dismissal put upon the remaining staff and acted in solidarity with their beloved colleagues.
“No staff member at DMS could understand the sudden dismissal of the contracted individuals as their job performance was never in question at the school, and they were very much still needed in the classroom.
“The BUT commends the staff of DMS for their resolve in the face of what can be described as almost abusive behavior by the Ministry, and we will support our members in similar endeavors at every turn. We are a reasonable Union, and we will not stand for our members being treated unreasonably.
“We look forward to working with the Ministry of Education toward a speedy resolution of this matter.”
Update 10.07pm: A Ministry spokesperson said, “The Department of Education is advising parents and students from Dellwood Middle School that the school will open tomorrow, Tuesday 18 February, ready to resume normal school hours. Students should report to the school at their scheduled time.”
