“Learn-To-Earn” Information Session On Feb 17
Jobseekers are being invited to take part in the next “Learn-to-Earn” programme session, which pays participants while they train for careers in the restaurant industry, by attending an information session on February 17.
A spokesperson said, “The session – the fourth since the public-private training and development initiative launched last year – takes place February 17 at 3.00pm at the Department of Workforce Development, 23 Parliament Street, Hamilton.
“To register to attend, go to NewTourismJobs.com.”
“We encourage anyone who thinks they might be interested and would like to find out more, to fill out the brief online survey to register with the programme database,” said Karla Lacey, COO of the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA].
“The industry is committed to attracting Bermudian jobseekers to sustainable restaurant careers, as the hospitality sector is set to expand significantly in the next few years.”
The spokesperson said, “Learn to Earn, initially funded by independent restaurant groups as a pilot, in partnership with the Department of Workforce Development, Bermuda College, and the Tomasz Tabor Memorial Fund, with administrative and promotional support from the BTA, is an immersive, three-part training programme that kicked off in January.
“Thirteen participants were selected as the programme’s first group of trainees. They are progressing through its initial [four-week] stage, taking part in skills courses at Bermuda College as well as industry-specific training as baristas, food handlers, and wine servers, among other industry designations, before proceeding to paid, on-the-job training in local restaurants.
“Planning is now underway for the second cohort of trainees. Following Monday’s information and signup session, interviews will be held mid-month, with the next intake scheduled March 2.
“The project is part of an overall plan being developed in collaboration with the Bermuda government and industry stakeholders to attract jobseekers into the tourism industry generally. Individuals who register with the Department of Workforce Development will be alerted about job openings, training, and learning and development opportunities if they need to refresh or learn new skills.
“A 2019 PwC Bermuda study indicated the island’s need for hospitality workers will increase as new hotels open by 2021, including St. Regis Bermuda Resort, Azura Bermuda and Bermudiana Beach Resort.”
