Video Shows Misty Weather In Bermuda
“Bermuda is currently under the influence of a very moist airmass that is interacting with anomalously cool sea surface temperatures. The Bermuda Weather Service has been recording patchy mist and fog for the past 48 hours,” the BWS explained.
Update: The BWS explained, “Bermuda is currently under the influence of a very moist airmass that is interacting with anomalously cool sea surface temperatures. The Bermuda Weather Service has been recording patchy mist and fog for the past 48 hours, however, the mist that was blanketing the island has considerably lifted.
“Looking ahead into later today, Bermuda will remain warm and humid with extensive low cloud, however, the threat for mist and fog will notably decline, particularly later in the day as a cold front approaches from the west. Conversely, some patchy mist is still possible during the early evening.”
The BWS also added, “We had observations of mist at the airport throughout the weekend until earlier this morning, and as you may have seen from various pictures posted by the public, that mist thickened up enough to produce some ‘rare’ fog across the Island yesterday evening.
“The reasons for this mist/fog are due to:
- A very warm and humid airmass of tropical origin being steered into our area from the southwest ahead of an approaching front that will bring us showers later this evening;
- An anomalously cool sea surface temperate (by up to 1 degree Celsius or so)
- The combination of the two factors above means the warm humid air moving into our area is cooled by the sea, allowing the air to condense and form extensive mist/fog.
- It is also worth noting that when we had a sunny break yesterday, it become very warm with temperatures reached 24C/76F, making it one of the warmest days of the year so far.
“Finally, as stated earlier, true fog [when the visibility is reduced below 1000m] is quite rare for Bermuda, and typically only occurs a couple of times a year in the late winter/early spring, when warm/humid air over-rides a relatively cool sea. The technical term for it is ‘advection fog’.”
one of the strangest fogs I have witnessed in many,many years,add the lack of people and vehicles,it gives a new meaning to Isle of Devils.
Thick as pea soup.
We had planned to sail to Bermuda tomorrow on the NCL Gem,for our fourth visit. We love you Bermuda! See you next year. Be safe, Bermudians.
