BZS: Virtual World Oceans Day Celebration
The Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] will be holding an online celebration of World Oceans Day today [June 8].
A spokesperson said, “World Oceans Day has been celebrating the ocean on June 8th every year since 2002. As Covid-19 and social distancing are changing how we recognize our blue planet, the Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] is holding a virtual World Oceans Day celebration.
“The day will feature the Ocean Around Us, Oceanography, and Bermudian Based Ocean Conservation Programmes for ALL ages. The events of World Ocean’s Day can be viewed on Monday, 8th June from 10am-6pm on the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo [BAMZ] Facebook page. Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions via Facebook during the live event.
“During this daylong event, Dr. Alex Amat, the BZS Youth Programme Coordinator, will moderate LIVE presentations from programmes supported by the BZS and the Atlantic Conservation Partnership [ACP]. This includes “The Bermuda Turtle Project: One of the Longest-Running Projects of this Kind in the World”, and “Freedive our Beautiful Backyard” focusing on the BZS Kids on the Reef programme, which is sponsored by AXA XL. The day will also incorporate several informative videos from BAMZ, and marine-centric story-time, crafts and other fun activities for the entire family to enjoy.
“The staff of BAMZ will present on a range of topics, including animal rehabilitation at the facility, a virtual peek into the BAMZ Museum collections and two LIVE talks from Dr. Robbie Smith, Curator of the BAMZ Natural History Museum.
Choy Aming of the Bermuda Shark Project will go LIVE with “Sharks: Past and Future”, and Dr. Gretchen Goodbody-Gringley of the Bermuda Lionfish Taskforce will present “Follow the Lionfish”. There will also be a special World Oceans Day message from Sea Change Wine, an environmentally conscious wine which donates part proceeds of their sales to the BZS education programmes.
“After a day of watching and learning, the BZS invites you to finish the day with a rocking mini concert from Mohawk Radio at 6pm, in honor of World Oceans Day.
“How can you participate in the BZS World Oceans Day event?
- “1. Watch our LIVE presentations on the BAMZ Facebook page throughout the day and join in the conversation.
