BUEI Talks To Feature Falkland Islands

This month’s BUEI Talks: ‘Island SOS’ presentation will be hosted by Dr. Paul Brickle of the Falkland Islands

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is pleased to announce that this month’s BUEI Talks: ‘Island SOS’ presentation will be hosted by Dr. Paul Brickle of the Falkland Island. Dr. Brickle is the Chief Executive Officer of the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute [SAERI] and will be delivering a talk on ‘Pioneering Environmental Stewardship’ on Sunday, September 3rd at 3:00 PM.

“Running monthly, BUEI Talks: ‘Island SOS’ aim to highlight innovative Ocean Development initiatives from islands around the world. Each ‘Island SOS’ talk focuses on a singular island nation and topic, ranging from islands all over the globe like Montserrat and the Azores and aims to explore ideas like geospatial planning and citizen-driven marine protection among others.

“Dr. Brickle is a former Fisheries Biologist and Marine Ecologist of fifteen years with a BSc [Hons] in Marine Biology from the University of Newcastle and a MSc and PhD from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

“During his presentation, Dr. Brickle will discuss the innovative environmental stewardship of the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute [SAERI]. Established in 2012, SAERI aims to be a world-class research institute that teaches students and builds capacity within and between the South Atlantic Overseas Territories as well as globally through three focal areas: Ecosystems, Earth Science, and Remote Sensing and Data.

“Similar to Bermuda, the Falkland Islands are a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. The remote archipelago, located in the southern hemisphere, hosts a population of close to three thousand people and is home to diverse wildlife in the South Atlantic. While the North Atlantic has more Islands and a variety of coastlines, both the North and South Atlantic have distinct ocean currents that influence whether around the world.

“Each ‘Island SOS’ takes place live for an in-person audience at BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium with our overseas guests presenting via video link.
