Bermuda Sandcastle Competition On Sept 5
The annual Bermuda Sandcastle Competition will be held on Saturday, September 5th, on Horseshoe Bay.
A spokesperson said, “The annual Bermuda Sandcastle Competition is excited to announce its return this year. Planning for the event had been put on hold since March with the Coronavirus outbreak, but organizer Hannah Emmerson is excited to announce that they have been given the green light by Parks Department to hold the annual event on September 5th 2020 on Horseshoe bay. The event will of course be modified to follow Covid safety regulations but still hopes to bring joy and community spirit to an island needing an end of summer event to look forward to.
“This year, instead of the usual 40+ teams, numbers have been limited to 20 of the islands very best builders competing to create a themed 2020 sculpture out of the island’s signature pink sand, for a total of $3,000 worth of prizes.
“Because we want this to be a safe event the Competition has cut its numbers in half to make sure that the 20 plots of sand being used are safely socially distanced 10 feet apart. Therefore there are only two categories for people to register in, Adult and Family categories, with 10 teams [up to six people in each team] are able to enter. With only twenty teams The organizers have for the first time have asked contestants to build with a theme in mind, 2020!
“This year has been like no other for global events, from Australian wildfires, Corona Virus and a worldwide pandemic, lockdown with families and homeschooling, Murder hornets, Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd, British Royal family separations, Brexit, American politics with an impeachment trial and election looming and lets not forget the wildly popular show Tiger king that had everyone talking about Carol Baskin. Contestants will be competing for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each category with an overall prize for best on the beach of $600. Many of our previous top entrants are returning to defend their titles but there are still a few spots in each category available.
