BHEC Statutory Board Self-Assessment Report

August 14, 2020

The Bermuda Health Council released its 2019 Statutory Board Self-Assessment Report on the performance of regulated health professionals.

A spokesperson said, “The Statutory Boards Self-Assessment Report describes the process, by which, Statutory Boards report annually about their complaints and disciplinary procedures, board composition, and professional registration processes.

“The report also illustrates the ways the Health Council provides support to the Statutory Boards; and the broader health system’s commitment to registering trained and qualified professionals delivering care.”

Mr. David Rogers, Project Manager of Bermuda Health Council, said: “The role of health professionals continue to expand within our health system. Health professionals have the greatest influence on the island’s health outcomes. This fact has been magnified in the wake of COVID-19. It is important that statutory bodies continue to provide oversight and guidance to their various cohorts.”

“This year’s report showed that Statutory Boards continued to be largely compliant with their existing legislations and serves to reassure the public that their concerns about healthcare are being addressed through the complaints process.

“As the Health Council continues to enhance the delivery of health services, the Council has commenced additional administrative functions for the Bermuda Dental Board and the Optometrists & Opticians Council. With the exception of the Bermuda Medical Council and the Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Council, preparations are being made to receive the remaining Boards.

“With the expansion of function, the Health Council has made available a purpose-built space to be used by the Statutory Boards to allow greater capacity for meetings, electronic document storage, and dedicated data workstations.
