People Urged To Stop Irresponsible Dog Breeding

August 24, 2020

The ‘Punish The Deed Not The Breed’ group is appealing to the members of the public to please ensure they engage in “responsible ownership” of dogs, saying that there are an ”influx of puppies being irresponsibly bred in Bermuda.”

Grace Markham explained, “A group who was instrumental in rescuing prohibited dogs during the ban has noticed a steady uptick in cases of litters being sold or seized of pitbull-type puppies. On occasion we have been assisting with the rehoming and obtaining licenses for a number of both young and older dogs.

“The requirements to own a dog on the restricted list are quite clear, and anyone in possession of a pup that cannot meet those requirements runs the risk of seizure and ultimately euthanasia.

“It is becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable homes that can meet all requirements for ownership when we are made aware of pups needing rehoming with such frequency.

“As animal owners, it is your responsibility to maintain a healthy and legal environment for your pets.

“Failing to do so is animal abuse and contributes to the stereotype that Pitbulls are bad dogs [When in fact it’s irresponsible ownership].

“In the past, we have managed to send pups overseas but that is expensive and has relied on the generosity and kindness of strangers, this is our problem and we need to own it and take care of it here. Not export our problems.

“We want to keep them from being prohibited again, but the only way to do that is to ensure responsible ownership.

“We can only do this with the assistance of members of the public.

“Purchasing an illegal dog is an offense, yet we are hearing of multiple litters where pups are being bred and sold for significant amounts of money. This only encourages the continuous breeding.

“If you know of an illegal litter please report them to the wardens, you can do so anonymously if you need to.

“We are also sending out a plea to ask that people stop paying money for them.

“As long as there are persons willing to pay for them these breeders will continue. We need to remove the profit.

“The SPCA is often at capacity with dogs for adoption, we cannot accommodate the influx of puppies being irresponsibly bred in Bermuda.

“The result of this behavior has and will result in the euthanasia of innocent dogs.

“Help us prevent that by raising awareness of the issue.”
