Louis Rafael Corbin: Breaking Golf’s Colour Line
The premiere film screening of “Louis Rafael ‘Kid’ Corbin: Breaking Golf’s Colour Line in America, Canada, and Bermuda” will take place on Monday, September 28 at BUEI.
A Government spokesperson said, “On Monday, September 28, the Minister of Community Affairs and Sports, the Hon. Lovitta Foggo, JP, MP, will host the premiere film screening of “Louis Rafael ‘Kid’ Corbin: Breaking Golf’s Colour Line in America, Canada, and Bermuda”.
“The 20-minute short documentary explores the contributions of the Bermudian golfer Louis Raphael “Kid” Corbin, who led the charge against segregation in golf. The documentary features interviews with Dr. Jeffrey Sammons, Mr. Kim Swan JP, MP, and Mr. Corbin’s relatives. Mr. Swan will be available for questions following the screening of the film.
“The screening takes place 7.30 p.m. at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI). For those who will be in attendance, there will be strict health guidelines and physical distancing protocols in place.
“Last year as part of the Department’s Emancipation programming, Minister Foggo hosted a discussion on the Bermudian iconoclast, ‘Kid’ Corbin. Next week’s film screening is a continuation of the chronicling of Kid Corbin’s legacy.”
Minister Foggo said, “History shares that ‘Kid’ Corbin was widely credited with helping to change the course of history for blacks in the world of golf. Louis Raphael Corbin broke down barriers and pushed through adversity. The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs assisted in Dr. Sammons’ research on ‘Kid’ Corbin, which also helped in the creation of this short film chronicling Kid Corbin’s contributions.”
“Individuals interested in this upcoming event should contact 292-1681 or email Cultural Liaison and Development Officer Mr. Graham Mawer at gsmawer@gov.bm. The film will be available on the Department’s Bermuda Culture YouTube channel following the launch.”
