Covid-19: Over 39 Million Cases Worldwide

October 16, 2020

With the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to affect countries around the globe, the number of confirmed cases worldwide has now surpassed 39 million, with over 1,099,000 deaths worldwide, and the United States having the most confirmed cases and deaths in the world.

A BBC story said, “Coronavirus infections are continuing to rise rapidly, with an estimated 27,900 new cases a day in England, the Office for National Statistics says.

“This figure is far higher than the number of confirmed cases announced by the government each day.

“The R number has risen slightly to 1.3-1.5, with growth of the epidemic still widespread across the country. It comes as the highest level of restrictions are introduced in more of the UK.”

A CNN story said, “The US is nearing 8 million Covid-19 cases and averaging more than 50,000 daily new infections — a sign the country is in for a tough winter, experts say.

“Dr. Peter Hotez, professor and dean of tropical medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, called the rising average “an ominous sign.”

“This is the time when we could be entering one of the worst periods of our epidemic and one of our worst periods in modern American public health,” he said Thursday. “I’m very worried for the nation.”
