Question: What is the Bermuda Health Council?

“Answer: The Bermuda Health Council was formed through the Bermuda Health Council Act 2004. It includes a Board of up to 15 members and a passionate team that does the day to day work of fulfilling the mandate that is set out in the Act. The Health Council Act sets up the team to regulate, coordinate and enhance healthcare services that are available here on island. Simply put, the Health Council is here to support the residents of Bermuda as they interact with or work within the health system.

Question: Why does the Health Council exist?

“Answer: Staying healthy is sometimes difficult. The health system in Bermuda is here to help us along our journey in health. With so many parts, there is sometimes a need to keep the system connected. The Health Council was put in place to be a glue and a central resource for questions to be raised and answers to be given. For example, the Health Council keeps a record of all the healthcare business in Bermuda, where they are located, and what services they provide. This type of information is important when you’re looking for the right care, in the right places, at the right time. The Health Council also works with different groups to find ways to keep the system sustainable in the short and long term.

Question: What are the roles of the Health Council?

“Answer: I think the best way to explain our roles is to describe the committees of our Board. Our committees represent four priority areas: Healthcare Quality & Standard, Healthcare Regulation, Health Finance & Economics, and Audit & Governance. In short, we discuss ways the health system can achieve better health outcomes; ensure that there are rules so our residents receive consistent and high value care; review how much money we are spending and ways we can make healthcare more affordable; and ensure that the public money that is being invested in this organisation is spent wisely. While the Council is the primary regulator in health, we also play a key role in strategic thinking and evaluation of healthcare locally and internationally.

Question: How can I find out more detail about what the Bermuda Health Council is doing?
