[Updating] The Government has just announced that Premier David Burt, Minister of Health Kim Wilson and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ayoola Oyinloye will provide a Covid-19 update this evening [Dec 6] at around 8.00pm.

The island has recently experienced an increase in cases and as of this writing, Bermuda has a total of 288 confirmed Covid-19 cases to date. Due to the increase in cases, officials have recently made changes, including but not limited to, introducing fines for “persons not wearing a mask in accordance with the law,: changing the closing time for bars to midnight, and the police plan to have “officers in plain clothes” going into premises across the island.

We will have additional coverage following the press conference, and the live video below should start at around 8.00pm, and in the meantime you can view all our past coverage of Covid-19 here and our dedicated website BermudaCovid.com here.

Update 7.28pm: The Premier just tweeted that they will “give an update on our current status with Covid-19 & additional measures required to arrest the current outbreak.”

Update 9pm: The one hour replay of the press conference is below:

Update 9.05pm, then again at 9.30pm We will post the full statement as able, but in the meantime as a super brief summary, Premier Burt announced that “it is necessary to impose the following restrictions to contain the spread.”

He said that indoor bars and clubs will have to close starting from Tuesday, December 8th, with the Premier saying, “I do recognize there are economic consequences for businesses, and I do recognize the economic consequences for individuals, but we are going to provide the assistance which is necessary.”

The number of people allowed to gather will be reduced to a maximum of 20 people and the Premier said “no applications for large gatherings will be accepted until further notice.” In addition, he said “churches will revert back to 20% capacity.”

The measures will be in place until at least December 22nd, and the the Premier said the “goal with implementing these restrictions is certainly to reduce the spread of the coronavirus in our community.”

  1. Ringmaster says:

Sounds like the PLP have lost control of Covid, along with Bermuda’s finances.

    • WHAT? says:

First of all no country can control Covid and since we are talking about finances lets talk about the $185 million Morgans Point Hotel that you obaUBPerrs have us paying for as a guarantee.

Now we have a lego blocks for toddlers airport that wasn’t supposed to cost the tax payer any money but we have tax payers have pumped 20 million plus in and counting as a guarantee…….which will a every year.

The obaUBP is so worthless your own supporters lost respect in you fools and left you with 5 seats and a JETGATE.

      • Vortex says:

No, your comments are utter nonsense. The finances are a secondary issue, but PLP and finances? Don’t get me started. $3bn of debt, their failings.

But regardless of party politics, there is a real sense that when it comes to Covid the government are making it up as they go along, and lack leadership.

We all know the correct decision should be 20 people in churches too, but their deference to the religious community, regardless of what is safe and right evidences this.

        • Morning says:

Lack of leadership is why you made Horsegate the leader of the oba.

          • Mark says:

Lack of sense is why you’ll be first in line at the Koolaid table.

        • CREP. says:

We don’t hear of positive numbers coming from churches like we hear it coming from returning travelers, businesses, restaurants/clubs and now schools. Leave the churches alone as we have the proper protocols in place and are abiding by the rules enforced by COVID-19 rules and regulations – taking temperature, wearing masks, physical distancing, sanitizing hands, etc. I’m yet to enter a restaurant or business establishment that has taken my temperature.

      • saud says:

Lets talk about the 30 million per year, for 30 years,,,hospital fiasco that YOU plpers cooked up.
Lets talk about the $800 gifts that YOU plpers keep giving away to foreigners.
Lets talk about YOU plpers attempting to enshrine discrimination into the constitution.
        I think YOU should STFU!

  2. Curious says:

Have there been any discussions about opening bus windows? My understanding is that this is required in other countries to reduce Covid transmission.

    • Loquat tree says:

Yes it has been included in the transportation guidelines since summer,

      • Curious says:

Really? Then why do bus drivers routinely tell me to close the window if the A/C is on? Air conditioning actually makes the bus more dangerous because it circulates the airborne particles around the whole bus… What is the best way for me to handle this in the moment?

      • Question says:

Drivers are breaking guidelines all the time. I thought there was zero tolerance?

        • Curious says:

Where can I see these guidelines? I’m trying to figure out what to do. I’m an older man and don’t feel comfortable driving, but I also don’t want to risk my life just so the bus A/C can be efficient in the winter.

  3. Concerned says:

What about the schools? Shouldn’t government be considering closing the physical buildings now! Children can attend remotely.

  4. Imjustsaying says:

You the government are causing public anxiety and now with your ridiculous draconian laws for not having a mask on will create more anxiety. SMH!

    • anon says:

You can be fined for DUI because you could inadvertently harm people. You could inadvertently harm even more by ignoring the mask rules, so how are fines draconian? Vaccine is coming, it won’t be permanent so we just have to put up with it for a while longer. It would not take much for our hospital to be overwhelmed, just like what is happening in small communities across the US.

      • sage says:

If you drive a vehicle when drunk and harm people, that is not “inadvertent”, purposely not adhering to sensible prevention measures then infecting people is not either.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

      To Imjustsaying,

If you think our COVID-19 Regulations are “ridiculous draconian laws” I suggest you to to the UK where you will (statistically) stand a 5 times greater risk of acquiring COVID-19 and an 8 times greater risk of dying from it.

Alternatively, you can go to the US where you will (statistically) stand a 10 times greater risk of acquiring COVID-19 and an 8times greater risk of dying from it.

As for me, I am staying here where it is relatively safe.

  5. Red Pill says:

You wanna arrest the outbreak how about providing citizens with vitamin D 3 & C to help strengthen immune systems. All you

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Are you serious? You want the Government “providing citizens with vitamin D 3 & C to help strengthen immune systems”?

Do you know anything about the COVID-19 virus?

If it were that easy and inexpensive to save over 1.5 million lives do you not think that would have happened rather than investing billions of dollars in medical research looking for a vaccine or a medication to assist the respiratory system during infection?

  6. Blackmagic says:

It is not of control. Its people like you that’s out of control. Blaming everything on the PLP. It’s not like the OBA would done better for this country. Clearly showed that in this last election. Keep your fake news to yourself. You don’t get tired of pointing fingers. This is not PLPs fault A&**%.

    • Bernard says:

Covid is not the PLPs fault, but they have gone from an A to a D, they are messing it up.

      • anon says:

In general people are going to be split on what the right actions are. So no matter what they do, some will say they are messing up. There is a trade-off between livelihoods and life, how can they win? The only thing to mitigate this trade-off is asking for masks and social distancing. If that does not seem to be enough, it puts them in a tough spot.

  7. Imjustsaying says:

If this virus is so dangerous and contagious where are all the biohazard bins around the city and island to dispose your mask in?

    • Mook says:

This is it. Lol. Just go ahead and place that right in the bin. No biggy

  8. Child Masks says:

Why are children under age of 5 forced to wear masks???

  9. rotten onion says:

The PLP acting like the liberal quacks in the US. Burt stop watching CNN.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Would you would prefer that Bermuda adopt the ways of the UK or the US and increase the chances of catching COVID-19 by between 5 and 10 times and increasing the risk of dying from COVID-19 by between 8 and 9 times?

  10. bs says:

weak, target the bars with a ia lane excuse . Its not the bars its a FEW stupid individuals who can’t follow rules. Target and FINE them the bar staff do the bestvthey can but can not be in 1D laces at once.Face it the egoist has lost control of it and will try to deflect it away from themselves. Bars are NOT the only lace with large crowds or loose individuals.

  11. Marcusbmco says:

    Mr.Burt
    STOP watching CNN…..

  12. Joe Bloggs says:

    Marcusbmco, do some research!
