Swan: Swifter Removal Of Abandoned Vehicles
St. George’s MP Kim Swan is calling for “strengthening of regulations to allow for a swifter removal and impounding of abandoned vehicles in Bermuda.”
“The problem is front and center in my constituency #2, but is an islandwide problem – the law provides greater protection for the owner – but increased consideration must given to nearby residents and property owners,” Mr Swan said.
MP Kim Swan stated, “Abandoned vehicles – such as the car burned in a recent fire in St George’s is an eyesore – it cheapen a neighborhood.”
“I am in conversations with the Transport Minister to see if an amendment to the legislation or updated regulations are required to allow Transport Authorities to issue a removal order more swiftly than at present. In addition, I am asking if an impound location can be sought to work in tandem with finding a solution to allow swifter removal. “
“I have great empathy with my constituents and thank our Community/Parish Officer from the Bermuda Police Service for his assistance with this vexatious matter. “
“While this problem is experienced islandwide it is on our doorstep and we hope there can be a remedy to prevent undo delay in removal for future incidents.”
I agree a huge problem. But I’m confused, did Bernews contact Mr. Swan for comment or did he decide to call the media to tell him that he was looking to do something about it. Cause I’m thinking, just do something about it.
Been a problem for awhile and strangely enough a few of the regular hotspots are nearest to TCD. Glebe road, Palmetto Road, Bishop Spenser Road and others nearby have these issues regularly. One that I saw a few days ago was near Roberts Avenue and Glebe Rd. An abandoned car on a very narrow road on a yellow line! A huge safety hazard as well. Bakery Lane outside DandyTown and Standard Hardware always has two or three cards on blocks on the road. Mission Road was bad too. So glad I’m not an EMT, Police officer or Firefighter navigating these roads on an emergency.
so Mr Swan. table a private members bill and show you mean this!
Mr Swan, can I remind you: you are the Government.
Not anymore.
He was the leader of the UBP when the majority of members left and joined the BDA and corrupted it into the OBA. What does that tell you?
Abandoned cars in neighborhoods show the quality of people that live there, not all of them mind you.
Don’t be ridiculous, people can abandon rubbish, be it a car or a washing machine, anywhere they like.
@ Bobby Jones
The abandoned cars are mainly abandoned by those who do not live in those neighborhoods.
Well your in Government Christopher you also should do something about.
It’s very easy as you both know whom they belong too.
Come now don’t be so protective of these people. Apparently the burnt out car in the picture is from that area.
Note that I said not all in the neighborhood, it only takes one non caring person to ruin it for others.
Help to get Bermuda cleaned up, you do so well in your area.
There is an epidemic of crime and violence that broke out under this government.
Mr Famous how do you know that those abandoning the cars do not live in that area? If indeed that is the case why are the owners of these abandoned vehicles not billed for their removal? In addition why are the they not charged with the offense?
Since 2017 we have had abandoned vehicles removed.
Parsons Road Playground-7 vehicles
Western Side of Cedar Bridge- 5 vehicles
The list goes on
The salient point is that 99% of those abandoning the vehicles are not the residents of those areas…Everyone knows who their neighbors cars…
“The salient point is that 99% of those abandoning the vehicles are not the residents of those areas”
That does not surprise me.
Thank your for releasing those Government statistics. It’s a shame no Cabinet member will release such information.
While you are doing that for cars, work on getting abandoned boats removed as well. They are in our bays, on de rocks, sinking or sunk at moorings, broken moorings. Clean up one time. Thank you
Coot Pond has more sunken boats than floating. A disgusting eyesore and it’s right by the St Regis hotel.
How many more boats is Sea Breeze Oval to collect?
