BELCO Preparing, Positioning Teams/Supplies
With severe weather expected to impact the island on Thursday [Jan 28], BELCO advised they have activated our Crisis Management Team and are preparing, which includes positioning supplies and teams in advance to address any outages that may occur.
The Bermuda Weather Service has issued both a ‘Gale Warning’ and ‘Storm Warning’ for Thursday.
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] today advised that preparations have been made in anticipation of severe weather related to a winter storm expected to impact the island on Thursday, January 28th.”
BELCO President Dennis Pimentel said: “In anticipation of potential hurricane force winds we have activated our Crisis Management Team and are preparing for the storm on Thursday. This includes positioning supplies and teams in advance to address any outages that may occur. Whatever the weather brings, we are prepared to address any issues that may occur as soon as it is safe to do so.”
“During the storm, residents are encouraged to visit BELCO’s website at www.belco.bm for up-to-date information including details of any outages that may occur. BELCO’s storm smart guide can also be downloaded from the website with all information required to stay safe during the storm,” the company added.
“For customers who do not wish to venture out during the storm BELCO’s Customer Experience team will be available over the phone on 299-2800 or assist via email at info@belco.bm.
“As a reminder, residents should be aware of the following safety tips:
Downed Power Lines
“Downed power lines pose extreme danger.
- “Stay away from downed power lines – at least 35 feet or more [that’s approximately three car lengths].
- “Always assume downed power lines are energised and dangerous.
- “Stay clear of piles of debris or downed foliage that may conceal live power lines.
- “Do not run from a fallen line. Running from a fallen line may cause your legs to bridge current from higher to lower voltage and you may receive a shock. Instead, keep your legs together and shuffle away with both feet on the ground. Shuffle a safe distance [35 feet or more] away from other utility poles.
Unplug Sensitive Electronic Equipment
“Unplug any appliance, electronics or other sensitive equipment before the onset of high winds.
- “While plug-in surge protectors protect against common, small surges, unplugging is the safest bet for lightning surges that may occur during a storm.”
