BFRS Rescue Man Trapped In Overturned Crane

[Updated] The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service rescued a man who was “trapped in the cab of an overturned crane” in St George’s today [March 22], with the BFRS saying “fire crews found one man trapped with no obvious injuries and conscious in the cab of the overturned crane.”

A BFRS spokesperson said, “On Monday March 22 2021, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service Dispatch received a call reporting a crane had overturned in the area of the St Regis Hotel work site in St George’s with one man trapped in the cab of the overturned crane.

“BFRS responded to the incident with one fire appliance, one ambulance from Clearwater Station and one fire appliance from Hamilton station with a total of eight Firefighters.

“On arrival fire crews found one man trapped with no obvious injuries and conscious in the cab of the overturned crane.

“Using high pressure lifting bags firefighters were able to lift the crane and extricate the trapped worker.

“The worker was then transported to KEMH via the fire service ambulance.”

Update 11.25am: A police spokesperson said, “Shortly after 8:00 a.m. today, Monday 22nd March, 2021, police attended a report of an industrial accident in the area of the St. Regis Hotel property in St. George’s.

“Reports are a crane was being moved along nearby Barry Road when a mechanical failure occurred, causing it to topple over down an embankment and onto the property.

“The crane landed on its side, with the operator trapped inside.

“Bermuda Fire and Rescue personnel assisted in extracting the operator, who sustained a non-life threatening leg injury, for which he received attention at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and discharged.

“No one else was injured in the incident.

“A police Traffic Collision Investigator along with a government Health and Safety Officer attended the scene and an investigation into the incident has begun.”
