City To Renovate Victoria Street Bathrooms

March 2, 2021

The City of Hamilton will be renovating of the Victoria Street public bathrooms to “make them safer, more robust and easier to keep clean,” with the bathrooms to closed to the public while the work takes place.

A spokesperson said, “The City of Hamilton is about to embark on a full renovation of the Victoria Street public bathrooms to make them safer, more robust and easier to keep clean. Work will commence mid-March and will take several months, during which time the bathrooms will be closed to the public.

“Gorham’s Management Design was awarded the contract to carry out the works, following the usual Invitation to Tender process earlier this year. The renovation will include the installation of all-new stainless steel bathroom fixtures and will see the elimination of communal bathroom space.”

Assistant City Engineer Charles Waters said, “The Victoria Street bathrooms have historically been a target for vandalism due to the fact they are in an area with high foot traffic. So, with these new ones, we wanted a design that was more robust, not so easy to damage, which is why we have gone with stainless steel fixtures.

“Also, something else which makes this design unique is the fact that we are doing away with communal bathroom space; the public will access individual private stalls with their own sink and hand dryer. This will increase people’s safety, security and comfort when using the bathrooms.

“The bathroom will be the ‘test case’ for future bathroom renovations in the City; if the public like the new concept, we will roll it out in other locations.”

The City added that the “public will be advised when bathrooms reopen.”
