Police Statement On Fight In Darrell’s Wharf Area
Police responded to the Darrell’s Wharf area in Warwick early this morning where a “large crowd of individuals” were “watching a fight involving a 27-year-old male and a 23-year-old male” and “the 27-year-old was tasered and both officers detained him while trying to keep the upset onlookers at bay.”
A police spokesperson said, “Around 1:20 am today, Thursday 29 July 2021, police officers were on patrol a in the area of Darrell’s Wharf, Harbour Road, Warwick, when they came upon a large crowd of individuals watching a fight involving a 27-year-old male and a 23-year-old male.
“Officers intervened, arrested the 23-year-old and escorted him to their nearby vehicle. At that point, the 27-year-old man began fighting with other persons at the location.
“One of the officers attempted to arrest him, but he violently resisted while the crowd threatened and closed in on the officer. The officer’s partner went to his colleague’s assistance.
“The 27-year-old was tasered and both officers detained him while trying to keep the upset onlookers at bay. Other officers arrived on scene and helped in calming the crowd and searching for the 23-year-old who managed to escape during the arrest of the second man.
“The 23-year-old was subsequently arrested at a Paget residence. The tasered man sustained minor scrapes. One officer sustained minor hand injuries during the incident that was recorded on police body worn cameras.
“The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is aware of a video recorded during the arrests and now being circulated on social media.
“The video shows the tasered suspect on the ground with one officer over him and the second officer producing his baton as individuals from the crowd converge on and threaten to harm the officers. It then abruptly stops.
“Initial investigations indicate the officers involved in both arrests took action to protect themselves when their safety was threatened by individuals in the crowd.
“The investigation remains ongoing and the BPS urges anyone who may have been at the scene and witnessed the incident or, has any information regarding the events that transpired, to please call 211 or, the main police number, 295-0011.”
