Dr. Douglas To Provide Football Play-By-Play
Bermudian Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas will serve as a commentator during a University of California Berkeley football match today [August 29], with the game starting at 8.00pm Bermuda time.
A spokesperson said, “Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas – Bermudian professor, author, speaker and Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging [DEIB] – has added international soccer commentator to his portfolio.
“Dr. Douglas is now serving as a play-by-play announcer and color commentator dubbed ‘The Voice of Cal Soccer’ for the University of California Berkeley’s Men’s and Women’s Soccer Programs, a broadcast that is streamed on the Pac-12 Network’s online platforms.
“As the leader of the Cal Athletics DEIB Office, Douglas initiated this new Cal soccer commentary partnership with Cal’s Athletic Study Center, which is led by Dr. Derek Van Rheenen—his broadcast co-host, a Cal Professor and Cal men’s soccer Hall of Fame member.
“Prior to this season, Cal’s live streamed games for their men’s and women’s soccer teams had been video only [without any commentary and announcers] when not hosted by the Pac-12 network.”
Cal Athletic Director Jim Knowlton said, “It is special to see and hear two members of my Director’s Cabinet offering color commentary during the game! I am grateful for their initiative to not only see this opportunity but to find a way to fill it with excellence!
“What a wonderful collaboration to have our Athletic Study Center Director and Cal Soccer Hall of Famer [Dr. Van Rheenen] and our DEIB leader [a former soccer player in Bermuda] sharing the game with parents, alums, fans and the wider Cal community.
“Our coaching staffs of both soccer programs are excited and grateful for this support from Dr. Van Rheenen and Dr. Douglas that will help accelerate our DEIB efforts through an enhanced video product; a product that will help us better share and celebrate the diversity of our athletes, their backgrounds and the ‘beautiful game’ of soccer.”
The spokesperson said, “Douglas’ commentary has already brought a colorful addition to notable in game moments, including a ‘double nutmeg’ in which Douglas can be heard declaring “oh my loooord!” that caught the attention of popular soccer Instagram platform @overtimefc and a long range wonder-strike from Cal’s Juan Martinez.
“See the full clip of the build up to Martinez’s goal here.
“Not only can Bermudians hear a Bermudian accent on this international broadcast, but Dr. Douglas’ live banter often includes references to Bermuda and Bermudians, like his home club, the Dandy Town Hornets, and mentions of Flora Duffy, Cup Match, and Bermudian football legends.
“In fact, an avid cricketer for Western Stars and Warwick Workmen’s Club while growing up in Bermuda, Douglas admits with a smile that his commentary has a decided ‘Cup Match commentary feel to it,’ and his selection of the name ‘The Voice of Cal Soccer’ is a tribute to Bermudian commentary legend ‘The Voice of Summer,’ The Honorable CV Jim Woolridge.
“Douglas is appreciative of the many Bermudians who have made significant contributions to local and international sport broadcasting, including the likes of Shaun Goater in soccer.
“Today at 8pm Bda time/ 4pm pst, Douglas will provide the play-by-play commentary for the Cal Women’s Soccer Match vs St. Mary’s. The Golden Bears have started the season strong and are undefeated so far this season [2-0-1], notably having tied defending national champions Santa Clara University last Sunday and defeating Portland on Friday.
