Wallpaper Wednesday: ‘To Be Free Is Very Sweet’

September 29, 2021

“To be free is very sweet,” Mary Prince wrote in her groundbreaking book, with the quote from the Bermudian National Hero featured on the latest design in Bernews weekly Wallpaper Wednesday series, with the text set against a view of the Mary Prince Emancipation Park in Devonshire.

Ms Prince – who was born almost 233 years ago, on October 1st, 1788 — authored a book detailing her first hand experience of being enslaved, helping to galvanize the anti-slavery movement. In 2012, she was named a Bermuda National Hero and in 2020, Bermuda’s Parliament approved an amendment to the Public Holidays Act 1947 to rename the second day of Cup Match as Mary Prince Day.

“I am often much vexed, and I feel great sorrow,” Mary Prince wrote in her book, adding “all slaves want to be free, to be free is very sweet.”

The background image of the design is Mary Prince Emancipation Park — previously known as Devonshire Bay Park — and in renaming it in 2020, the Government explained that, “Mary Prince was born in Brackish Pond. Brackish Pond was the colloquial name at that time for the parish of Devonshire and most of the houses where she was enslaved were also in Devonshire.

“This site not only reflects her connection to Devonshire, but the park’s good access, central location, tranquility, and proximity to the ocean facing south are an acknowledgement of the parts of her life spent in the Caribbean, providing an ideal location to commemorate Mary Prince,” the Government said.

Funny thing is that we aren’t free around these times, the audacity to even publish this makes me sick, they’re stripping us of our rights to be free and than you put something like this on the web is like we’re being teased.

With all due respect – we disagree. For one, in our view, it is *always* a good time to highlight an icon like Mary Prince.

Secondly, we try and time the Wallpapers to be topical/timely and Ms Prince’s birthday is tomorrow.

Thirdly, this weekly series is not exactly ‘hard news’ it’s just designed to be a pro-Bermuda uplifting weekly feature, hence why we are pushing back some, as the intent is positive :-)

Who cares what this woman’s perspective was. We live in different times!
