October 29, 2021

The One Bermuda Alliance [OBA] has listed their five candidates for the Warwick constituencies — which were all won by the PLP in the 2020 General Election — with the OBA’s stated candidates including Tarik Smith, Douglas De Couto, Kim Wales, Justin Mathias, and Jeff Sousa.

In an email sent out the graphic below appeared, which lists the five candidates, with four of the seats having different stated candidates since the 2020 General Election, when the OBA contested four of the five Warwick seats.

In C#24 Warwick South East, the OBA lists Tarik Smith, who also ran for them in 2020, while in C#25 Warwick North East, the OBA lists Douglas DeCouto, who has run for the OBA before, however not in this seat.

In C#27 Warwick North Central, the OBA lists Justin Matthias, who contested a by-election previously for the OBA, however did not run in the last General Election.

In C#28 Warwick West, the OBA lists Jeff Sousa, which will mark a return to the area as he held this seat until the 2017 General Election when he was defeated by the PLP’s Dennis Lister III. In the last election Mr Sousa stood for the OBA in C#36, which had three candidates, Mr Sousa, the FDM’s Marc Bean and the PLP’s Kathy Lynn Simmons, who won the seat.

A General Election is not expected to be held anytime soon, with the last one taking place just over a year ago, on October 1st, 2020.

The 2020 election — which was contested by 36 PLP candidates, 31 OBA candidates, 14 FDM candidates and 5 Independent candidates — saw the PLP win in a 30 – 6 landslide, with a vote count of 25,760 out of a total of 46,311 registered voters, equating to a voter turnout of around 55.6%.

The island’s other opposition party, the FDM, has been very quiet. Bernews’ attempts to reach them for comment have not been successful, and they have not updated their Instagram, YouTube or Twitter accounts since last year, and have only updated their Facebook page four times in 2021, with the last time being in May.

  1. Unbelievable says:

Well alright OBA. Looking good but don’t be resting on your laurels. Get these folks out there cuz BDA needs new leadership. The PLP have no ideas how to turn this ship around. They really don’t.

    • swing voter no more!!! says:

Funny thing is the obaUBP have no idea how to raise the ship LOL. They really don’t.

Last I check everyone departed and now vote PLP.

      • Unbelievable says:

The OBA had way more success in its 4 short years in turning Bermuda around than the PLP has had since 1998. The PLP still haven’t even enacted any of their 2017 election platform manifesto. You have no leg to stand on.

        • TRUTH says:

You went down to 6. You’re not going to win the next election and it’s 3 years away. The leader you have now won’t be the leader either.

          • Unbelievable says:

I didn’t go down to 6. The OBA did. I am not the OBA. But you’re right. The OBA will not take the Govt at the next election. Sadly, people like you will just vote blindly based on some long gone quarrel that seems so distant. And that, my friend TRUTH, is where you reside. In the past.

            • TRUTH says:

Go shuffle the oba that’s the only play card left.

              • Unbelievable says:

You care about the future just as much you care about debating. Zero. The future will not be kind to the PLP. Or you.

  2. Question says:

Good luck to al of them. We need new ideas, that’s for sure.

  3. Toodle-oo says:

Unfortunately with the way our politics have matured since 1998 into a hateful , racial and divisive operative anyone NOT running for the PLP (OBA or a new party) will instantly be branded as turncoats not remembering their history , Uncle Toms , House ****** or having , as an ex PLP mp once said ‘white hearts’ and even worse.
It takes a lot of character to ignore and overcome that and I give everyone who presents themselves to run in any party that is not the PLP a lot of credit.
We urgently need to turn this island around and save it and us. 30-6 isn’t going to do it by any stretch of the imagination .
As long as they’re in the economy will not stabilize or grow. Just wait ’till they come after your money directly. Remember Greece 2009

    • JAWS says:

If the racist UBP hadn’t did what they did, black voters would still support the party. Also it could’ve kept the same name instead of changing it to OBA to run away from past mistakes. The UBP is the very reason the PLP is so strong today. Say I’m wrong I dare you. 30 – 6!!!

      • iyiyi says:

Maybe or maybe not , but it still does not change the fact that we need new leadership and / or a more balanced house regardless of race to hopefully work more together to correct the path we are heading for . The right people for the job without the race cards.

        • JAWS says:

I agree on the MAYBE 100%! That’s why black voters left.

      • Toodle-oo says:

Tell me what all those racist things were that the UBP did .
The black middle class grew exponentially and more black millionaires per sqaure mile than any other place on earth were made while they were in. The civil service went from nearly all white to nearly all black and blacks were traveling the world and educating their children overseas in numbers never seen. People could leave one job on a Friday and have another on the following Monday and have multiple jobs . And we had no debt.
So , tell you me what was so racist about them , and facts only please , not emotional folklore. I dare you !

        • JAWS says:

Ask your new ubperrOBA they change the name for the very reason and don’t talk some BS that we wanted to be rebranded.

          Lies get you 30-6.

          • Toodle-oo says:

That silly name change schtik is all you’ve got in your emotional fairy tale arsenal.
Now , please tell me how the UBP was so racist without all the emotional fairy tale stuff. I dare you !

      • sandgrownan says:

It’s actually irrelevant what the UBP did. Totally. Regardless of how you view history, we are here, now, today, in 2021.

If you feel the old UBP was racist, then so be it. But they are nearly all dead or very old now. The OBA is objectively a way more diverse party than the PLP regardless of how you view it.

The simple fact remains, that after almost 22 years of PLP rule Bermuda has an unsustainable debt, unsustainable civil service, declining tourism, declining population, shuttered shops, closed and struggling businesses, buses don’t run, can’t get a taxi, increased use of food banks, trash doesn’t get collected, rampant mismanagement of the public purse and a government that openly competes with private business with our money. Increasing gang violence, declining educational standards, roads take months to fix, the mail doesn’t get delivered. Inability to tackle immigration, or emigration. Rising inflation, healthcare and cost of living.

The only green shoots of recovery happened during the brief OBA time in Government.

That’s what you voted for – so you can stick your 30-6 up your arse. The PLP are a failure.

        • Ja says:

It’s relevant that’s why your OBA keeps losing. By your blog you already know the next election will be the same results lol. 30- 6 up your arse right lol

          • sandgrownan says:

Not my OBA, by a long way, and nor do I think they are effective in opposition.

AND, you are correct, they probably won’t get elected because Bermudians are stupid enough to vote for constant failure and incompetence “because it’s their team”.

Bermudians respond to dog whistle politics, and they believe conspiracy theories, and everything that is wrong is always someone else’s fault.

            • JAWS says:

Here you have it obaUBP if your own supporters won’t vote for you anymore why should the black voters return. All they do is cry like babies and complain about you and the PLP.

              • sandgrownan says:

I think, unwittingly, you have proved my point. Bermudians will always vote for their team and not for competence.

We will, sadly, continue the death spiral as Bermuda endures continued incompetence, failure and fiscal mismanagement.

                • JAWS says:

OBA your supporters are laughing at you.

                  • sandgrownan says:

Your reading comprehension is lacking. You are a prime example of why Bermudians vote for failure.

                    • LOL says:

Stop crying the oba is finished before they even hit the race track. You are a prime example of why the voters don’t vote oba anymore now stay mad everyday.

                    • sandgrownan says:

                      Sadly, it’s Bermuda that’s finished.

          • saud says:

The OBA lose, because Bermudians vote based on skin colour. It’s that simple.

  4. Squid says:

let’s do something about this ridiculous situation that a Bermudian has to wait
4 Months to get a passport renewed !!!!!!
