BWS Issues Severe Weather Watch
[Updated] The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] has issued a Severe Weather Watch and Thunderstorm Advisory for today [Nov 29], noting that “the potential exists for squalls carrying gusts to 50-60 knots near showers and thunderstorms.”
The BWS forecast for today states, “An active and strong cold front approaching from the west will spread showers, possibly heavy at times while afternoon squalls with severe gusts may also form near thunderstorms. The front exits this evening with settling weather across the area for the remainder of the week.”
A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of National Security is advising the public that the island will experience unsettled weather later today. The Bermuda Weather Service notes that a Severe Weather Watch has been issued for this afternoon. According to the BWS, an active cold front approaching from the west will spread showers, possibly heavy at times. Severe gusts may also form and the potential exists for thunderstorms.
“The front exits this evening with settling weather across the area for the remainder of the week. The Ministry notes that the public should take the necessary safety precautions, and motorists should exercise extra caution during their afternoon commutes.
“As a reminder, hurricane season concludes tomorrow [Nov 30]. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared as the cooler months approach, which can see frequent winter gales. For continued weather updates, visit weather.bm.”
Update: The BWS posted the graphic online below, saying, “Update 4:30PM 29 Nov 2021 – Phew, that was a close one! Thankfully, the worst activity associated with this system developed away from the island, and has cleared south of the Marine Area. Accordingly, BWS has cancelled the Severe Weather Watch. Although the main threat has passed, we continue the wet conditions through the evening, with a Thunderstorm Advisory and a Small Craft Warning in effect. After the front passes tonight, expect cooler, brighter weather for the next few days. Check back for regular updates at www.weather.bm.”
