William Welch Completes Second iEPC Internship

December 20, 2021

Engineering company iEPC Limited intern William Welch has completed his second 12-week internship at the Company as part of his university engineering programme and will soon return to school.

Mr  Welch is a second year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Like many, he attended classes virtually from home in Bermuda during Covid-19 restrictions and was fortunate to have the opportunity of an internship in Bermuda rather than the traditional programmes available in Canada.

The University’s co-op programme entails studying for one term, completing a work internship for the next, then going back to school for the following term, and so on. There are 6 co-op terms in all during the University of Waterloo Engineering programme, approximating 2 years of work experience along with a 4-year Honours degree.

He became interested in engineering in grade 11 of secondary school when he said he realised that he enjoyed building things and figuring out solutions to problems.

“My ultimate career goal is to have a job that I really enjoy doing and allows me to help people. I hope to achieve that by becoming a professional engineer,” he said.

iEPC is involved in many areas of engineering including mechanical, structural, civil, electrical, and environmental engineering. The internship involves shadowing different engineers at iEPC and watching what they do and how they do it, in addition to helping on projects, such as performing survey work and data analysis.

Director of Project Management, Michael Maughan said: “It has been a pleasure to have had William with us for his second internship at iEPC. We have certainly kept him busy on several projects and he has been a great addition to the team and is quick to learn.

“I am sure he will succeed and excel as an engineer. I know the entire team at iEPC wishes him the best as he continues with his studies and we look forward to assisting him on his journey to becoming an engineer.”

Commenting on his internship, he said: “I’ve had a great time working at iEPC over these past 12 weeks. I’ve learned so much and developed skills that will help me as I work towards completing my engineering degree.

“Everyone at iEPC have been welcoming and willing to share their experience and knowledge I would also like to thank the team at iEPC for supporting me over this work term and teaching me really useful skills that I will use and carry with me for life.”
