50 Speeding Tickets Issued In One Hour
50 speeding tickets were issued in just one hour — between 5.30am and 6.30am — this morning [Jan 12], and the police have continued to appeal to the public to slow down.
In an online post, the Bermuda Police Service said, “This morning between 5:30am and 6:30am the Roads Policing Unit issued fifty speeding tickets for speeds between 60kph and 83kph.
“Location of checks – Turtle Place, South Road, Southampton. Tickets were also issued for no Drivers License, No Insurance and No Vehicle License.”
Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell said, “Early morning speed checks will continue and we will be setting up in the problematic areas being reported by members of the public.”
“Slow down Bermuda,” the police added.
Still no drunks caught, they enjoy carte blanche and yesterday a guy got a $500 fine and 7 pointless points for 99 kph with no time off the road.
Ridiculous
And that guy who was doing 99k (shall we call it 60 mph ?) was not drunk either , like it seems 99% of all the other lunatics on the roads are not.
What we got , over 4000 crashes a year and maybe 8 out of 17 fatalities caused by booze ?
Driving under the influence (of ALL substances) is serious but our real problem is the totally lawless .
“50 speeding tickets were issued in just one hour”
The Bermuda Police Service found a spare policeman to put on traffic duty!
This is why we continue to have serious injuries on our roads , there is a large portion of this population that frankly dont care if you fine them or take away a few points there is no deterrent in that . When will the judges take this serious and not treat it as a revenue source for the Government. If we are serious about slowing them down then we must start making the penalty stiff enough they think twice about what they are doing . Start removing licenses take them off the road and yes ,if they ride without a license send them to jail
When will we get serious
Our speed limit of 35kph is ridiculous and outdated. it was created and set in the 1930s and is literally for horse and buggy top speeds which were 22mph. How crazy that in our modern day with modern vehicles we are stuck driving so slow and penalized so harshly for so much money. Any other civilized country would have much higher limits. Canada has narrow roads like ours with speed limit of 80kph.
No we don’t. We have much wider roads everywhere and the speed limit on our small side rodes is 40-80. Our roads would be double, if not triple the size of Bermudian equivalents. Our speeds tend to be 40 if the road is residential (which almost all of Bermuda would be classified as by Canadian standards) 60 in choke points or high traffic areas (which Bermuda is full of) and 80 if wide open farm land (which Bermuda has none).
With your tiny and tight roads the max speed we’d ever give them would be about 50 (which, shockingly, is already the speed you can travel without enforcement).
“Our speed limit of 35kph is ridiculous and outdated. it was created and set in the 1930s …”
Ok, Bermuda history time. There were no private cars or lorries in Bermuda until after WWII. That is why our Road Traffic Act is from 1947.
The “unofficial” speed limit was 30 MPH for many years. It seems to have increased to 40 MPH or so in the last 10 years.
40 MPH is still too fast for most cars to navigate the island safely.
And I have driven in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. I have never seen a road as narrow as our roads in Canada.
good grief, are you serious? more stiff penalties? you already get fined like $400 for doing like 35mph, how crazy do you want it to be?
How many people will need to die before you say something has to change .you know whats interesting is we gauge the seriousness of this subject on deaths what needs to be communicated is how many Collusions result in lost limbs , paralysis , brain damage and impact the lives of not only the drivers and riders but on their families.
I offer my congratulations to those police officers responsible for issuing those tickets.
Well done.
Just wondering, if they issued any tickets for “Loud Sound”?
As many of the bikes that pass by my house on Middle Road in Paget are creating
an almighty racket, not just speeding.
Especially down that long hill from the church to the gas station.
Thanks for your continuing efforts.
set up radar at the traffic lights in Southampton !!
That would also serve a double purpose of stopping a dozen + cars at a time running the red light . It’s the wild , wild west .
