Audio | Caines: ‘Make Bermuda A Better Place’

February 23, 2022

“We are pontificating and trying to understand why the Minister of Finance left” and we should be focusing on what we all “do to make Bermuda a better place,” MP Wayne Caines said.

Speaking in the House of Assembly on Friday, Wayne Caine said ”I know the Minister of Finance, and what is irrefutable is that he is a man of integrity and that he is a man of honour and that he has served this country with distinction.”

“The resignation of the Minister of Finance was a shock to us all. I think this has given us an opportunity to do some introspection.

“When people look and they say who will be the next Finance Minister, or what we’re going to do with our budget, I take something that I said in our caucus, Mr. Speaker: this is an opportunity for us all to work together, to band together, to look at the Band-Aids where they need to be applied, to look at whether introspection needs to take place.

“What is clear is that this party has a history of overcoming obstacles, of working together, of being strong, and understanding what the people of Bermuda need. We did not get elected to Government for what Wayne Caines wants or what Curtis Dickinson wants or what David Burt wants; we are an amalgamation of the thoughts, the hopes, the dreams of all of Bermuda.

“No matter what I might think personally of where we are, this party is committed to changing things for the people of Bermuda. This is a wake up call and this is an opportunity for us to reset, and the reset must take place where we all dig into what is important to us, and that is the work, the time, that the people of Bermuda need.”

He said, “This is an opportunity for us all to put our oars in the water. We are pontificating and trying to understand why the Minister of Finance left, but, Mr. Speaker, it is my assertion that that’s not what we need to focus on.

“We need to focus on all of our different compartments and all the different things that we do and what can we do, or what can I do, or what can my family do to make Bermuda a better place.”

The text above represents only a small portion of Mr Caines’ comments, for full context please listen to his full 17-minute speech during the Motion to Adjourn on Friday, where multiple MPs spoke, and you can access additional audio of their comments here.

  1. LOL (original) says:

This looks like a call for help.

  2. Guy Carri says:

Sounds great, lots of fancy words, but LMAO!!!

    Face value – nothing there.

Hidden message – we need help! We’re WAY off track!

Wayne – say it clearly next time.

  3. sandgrownan says:

Even Titty-Milk has been rolled out! LOL.

What a waste of oxygen that speech was – he said nothing of value. 20 years of fiscal imprudence, xenophobia, hate, failure, lies, homophobia (this one is particularly laughable given recent events) has led us to this, and you cannot say you weren’t warned. And now you want us to work together?

  4. Observer says:

First things first, get rid of the race card, the hateful speeches, the blame game, the deceipt, the none of your business attitude, the poor customer service, the I’m owed something attitude and we might just might save the island. Without this the road ahead is kind of bumpy.

  5. Disappointed says:

“this is an opportunity for us all to work together, to band together, to look at the Band-Aids where they need to be applied, to look at whether introspection needs to take place.”

We need to look at the Band-AId where they need to be applied? Wrong analogy – masking problems is not the solution.

How about the government work with the attitude of service, integrity, and humility. My impression is that no one in government really cares, nor the opposition about the fate of our island. It seems as long as you are comfortable in your homes with your income, then life is just peachy.

I recognize no government can eradicate the many social ills that exist in our community, nor will they be able to solve all of the financial challenges our country faces. And I do recognize it will take a concerted effort on everyone’s part – both Bermudas – to improve the quality of life of Bermudians. However, those that genuinely want to serve their fellow men, not for accolades or financial reward, but to make life better for others need sign up for the positions of leadership.

So Wayne Cains – I hope you read this. Here are my concerns: (random order)
1.) Government Pension – what is plan to ensure pension in the years to come are sustainable
2.) Mortgage rates – banks ability to continue to increase their interest rates
3.) Education – it’s time to privatize schools and allow school boards to run them. Of course this model does not come without its own challenges but it would certainly be a wake-up call for standards and accountability for all ( students, parents and educators)
4.) Gang Violence – And what is Pastor Bean really doing in this position.
5.)Economy – how do we grow it.

  6. Joe Bloggs says:

“What is clear is that this party has a history of overcoming obstacles, of working together, of being strong, and understanding what the people of Bermuda need.”

What is clear is that “this party” has a history of “us and them”, of “divide and conquer”, of pandering to “real Bermudians” and “our people” whilst trying to drive the rest out of Bermuda.

If the PLP Government is serious about improving Bermuda it will create a “truth and reconciliation commission” and it will practice fiscal responsibility for the long-term benefit of all Bermudians.

  7. Will says:

Oh snap! I totally forgot this guy was an MP!

  8. Ringmaster says:

Maybe they need to be reminded it wasn’t that long ago the the catch phrase was “we don’t care what you think”. Now suddenly it’s “we care what you think and need help from you because we don’t have a clue”.

  9. Proven says:

Government is not the solution. You are making it worse by believing you are the solution. It will continue to get worse as long as you attempt to dominate every aspect of Bermuda life.
This is a serious business that requires serious people with knowledge.
Why am I wasting my time?

  10. Sick of it All says:

Oh Snap! Bewildered! Did you notice? Even Gov’t workers are begging for food. That doesn’t even speak well for the Government. What will they do about that? Premier? MPs? Are they all not supposed to be unified? Sounds like a broken Gov’t. Thanks Burt. Thanks. Thanks all you lot. My car suspension is dragging from these miserable roads. Will you pay for it? These are the roads you give us. Obviously my TCD massive charge does nothing to assist. Don’t you think I would give you a NO CONFIDENCE VOTE? How we can make Bermuda a better place is a Far-Away dream. My children are growing up on a miserable, pitiful Island at the hands of a darn spoiled few. Some place!
