February 5, 2022

BUEI Talks return on February 26th with ‘Island SOS’, an eight-part series focusing on “innovative sustainable ocean development initiatives in island nations around the globe.”

A spokesperson said, “BUEI Talks return on February 26th with ‘Island SOS’, an eight-part series focusing on innovative sustainable ocean development initiatives in island nations around the globe. Each BUEI Talk: ‘Island SOS’ presentation focuses on a different island and topic, covering subject matters ranging from beach management master planning, and zero waste event management, to the rule of law in building community capacity to advocate for environmental protection. The entire series is sponsored by Chubb.

“BUEI appreciates the generous sponsorship of Chubb, which enables us to highlight the unique perspective and involvement that islands have on ocean conservation and to showcase the different practices they’ve undertaken to safeguard their surrounding oceans. It is our hope that these informed talks inspire and encourage discussions throughout the community.

“The Philippines kicks off the first ‘Island SOS’ presentation on Saturday, February 26th at 2:00pm, with Anna Oposa, Executive Director of Save Philippine Seas [SPS]. With over seven thousand islands, the Philippines is the world’s second largest archipelago hosting more species of coral than the entire Caribbean Sea and the US Sea put together, and more than the Great Barrier Reef. Anna will focus on the ocean waste management and sustainability initiatives led by SPS.”

“Chubb is proud to be a sponsor of the BUEI – Talks Series,” said Samantha Froud, Chief Administration Officer, Chubb – Bermuda Operations, and member of Chubb’s Bermuda Green Team.

“This event aligns with Chubb’s mission to promote a healthy and sustainable planet, strengthen the resilience of communities and protect biodiversity against the effects of climate change. We are delighted to help further awareness throughout our community about ocean sustainability initiatives, and to encourage everyone to help safeguard the health of the ocean surrounding our beautiful island.”

The spokesperson said, “In addition to underscoring the challenges and opportunities Bermuda shares with other islands, each one-hour presentation emphasizes our connection to three of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable; conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development; and strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.”

“We are excited to have this opportunity to present these talks to the community and are pleased to be opening the series with the Philippines. Though geographically distant, Bermuda shares many similarities with the Philippines such as seasonal hurricanes and being a habitat for a number of maritime sea turtles.

“BUEI Talks take place in front of a live audience in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium, with overseas guests presenting online in real time. Each talk will be livestreamed privately on BUEI’s YouTube Channel and made public for viewing following an interactive Q&A conversation with the audience. Scheduled monthly from February through September, other islands to be featured include Hawai’i, Barbados, Jamaica and Sri Lanka.”

Karla Lacey, BUEI CEO, said, “Bermuda’s ecosystem is an integral part of our identity as a country and we appreciate Chubb’s support in funding this informative, educational series. Through these talks we hope to learn about different techniques being used by other island nations that may be beneficial in safeguarding our unique ecosystem or potentially provide the inspiration for a new method specific to Bermuda’s environment.”

The spokesperson said, “Tickets to each BUEI Talks: Island SOS presentation are $20 for non-members and $15 for members. Tickets can be procured by emailing info@buei.bm, by calling BUEI’s Ocean Gift Shop at 294-0204 or in person at BUEI’s Ocean Gift Shop.”
