Baha’i New Year First Day Of Spring

March 25, 2022

The Baha’is of Hamilton Parish joined the Bermudian Baha’i community and Baha’is around the world in observing Naw-Ruz on Monday [March 21].

A spokesperson said, “The Baha’is of Hamilton Parish joined with the entire Bermudian Baha’i community and the millions of Baha’is around the world in observing Naw-Ruz, on Monday, 21 March. Naw-Ruz translated means New Day.

“The eleven Baha’i locations throughout Bermuda celebrated their New Year in a variety of different ways.

“The Baha’i Faith, which originated in Iran, Persia in 1844, has its own calendar. The Baha’i calendar is based on the solar year and consists of 19 months each with 19 days, with the New Year occurring on the vernal equinox [March 21]. The solar year is equalized by four [five in Leap Year] Intercalary days or Ayyam-i-Ha days. These days precede the annual fast period of 19 days.

“The Baha’i years, months, and days are named after the attributes of God: for example Splendor, Beauty, Sovereignty, Justice, Independence, etc.

“Prior to Naw-Ruz, Baha’is throughout the world observed a 19-day period of fasting from sunrise to sunset to refresh and reinvigorate the spiritual forces latent in each individual. The Baha’i New Year coincides with the advent of spring, a time which mankind naturally associates with renewal and rebirth.

“On the Baha’i calendar, this is the 179th year. The Baha’i Faith began with the Declaration of the Bab in the year 1844 A.D. according to the Christian calendar. He was the Prophet-Herald of the Baha’i Faith. He was followed by the Prophet-Founder of the Baha’i Faith, Baha’u’llah, Glory of God, who lived much of His life in the Holy Land until His ascension in 1892.

“In its 179 years, the Baha’i Faith has spread to over 400 countries, islands and territories throughout the world.

“According to local Bermudian Baha’i records the first known Baha’i to visit Bermuda occurred about 93 years ago in 1929 and later the Bermudian Baha’i community established its national governing body known as the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Bermuda in 1981 – one of the pillars and electors of the world governing body of the Baha’i Faith, the Universal House of Justice.

“On Sunday, 27 March at 11am, the Baha’is of Hamilton Parish will present its Last Sunday of the Month Zoom programme on the spiritual significance of the Baha’i New Year coinciding with the beginning of Spring.
