BUEI Talks To Hold ‘Island SOS’ On March 26

March 17, 2022

The second instalment of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s [BUEI] Island SOS [Sustainable Ocean Strategies] series will take place on Saturday, March 26 at 4.00pm.

A spokesperson said, “The second instalment of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s eight-part Island SOS series is slated to take place at BUEI on March 26th at 4:00pm. This month’s island nation to be highlighted is Hawai’i, with a presentation by Rafael Bergstrom, Executive Director of Sustainable Coastlines Hawai’i [SCH].

“Rafael will speak on how SCH has significantly impacted the way waste is managed in Hawai’i through their Sustain Events Programme. This unique programme implements waste diversion systems for events both large and small, proactively preventing waste from entering landfills.

“SCH is an organization that first began in 2010 with eight friends sitting around a table in a small house in Kaimuki and has grown to consist of a small full-time staff and a large team of dedicated volunteers. The core activities of SCH include large scale immersive coastline clean-ups, community education and waste diversion. Since its inception, SCH has cleaned over 600,000 pounds worth of waste over a span of 240 cleanups, with the help of over 30,000 volunteers.

BUEI Talks Island SOS Hawaii Bermuda March 2022

“The Hawaiian archipelago is 2,000 miles southwest of the United States, Hawai’i’s proximity to the United States is uniquely comparable to Bermuda, 600 miles due east of the United States. Hawai’i hosts several similarities to Bermuda such as their tropical climate with a hot season from June to October [called kau in the Hawaiian language] and a relatively cool season from December to March [hoolio].

“Hawai’i also faces a similar challenge to Bermuda of high importation of goods to their island; a major factor in waste management.

“In Bermuda, the majority of our goods are imported making waste diversion a critical strategy to protect our beautiful environment. As Covid regulations begin to relax and larger events are able to take place, incorporating environmentally conscious choices when planning events is imperative,” said Karla Lacey, BUEI CEO.

“Hosting a sustainable event can reduce environmentally hazardous goods being imported to Bermuda, thus mitigating the level of pollution in the first instance. If you are interested in events management or eco-friendly living, you won’t want to miss this presentation.”

“Each BUEI Talk: Island SOS presentation focuses on a different island and topic, covering subject matters ranging from beach management master planning, and zero waste event management, to the rule of law in building community capacity to advocate for environmental protection. The entire series has been generously sponsored by Chubb.

“BUEI Talks take place in front of a live audience in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium, with overseas guests presenting online in real time. Each talk allows interactive Q&A between the presenter and the audience. Scheduled monthly from February through September, other islands to be featured include Barbados, Bahamas, Jamaica, Isle of Man and Tobago.

“Tickets to each BUEI Talks: Island SOS presentation are $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Email info@buei.bm or call BUEI’s Ocean Gift Shop at 294-0204 to reserve a space.”
