Sailor Assisted After Suffering A Possible Stroke
Officials assisted a “lone elderly male crewman aboard a 41 foot sailing vessel” who was in need of medical attention after “suffering from a possible stroke.”
A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Friday 4th March, 2:38pm. Call received by RCC Bermuda from Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service Dispatch regarding a lone elderly male crewman aboard a 41 foot sailing vessel in Emily’s Bay, St. George’s Harbour who was reported to be in need of medical attention suffering from a possible stroke. Name and description of vessel that he is onboard is unknown. RCC / Bermuda Radio attempts to contact two vessels observed underway near Emily’s Bay, without success.
“The pilot boat St. George on standby at Ordnance Island in St. George’s is contacted and her crew briefed to proceed to the area to locate the vessel in question and to determine the condition of the occupant who may be incapacitated. The pilot boat is on scene in Emily’s Bay within 10 minutes and locates the sail boat in question, transferring one of her crewman onboard to attend to the patient.
“Meanwhile the St. George proceeds to the Chapel of Ease public dock where RCC have directed BFRS EMTs from Clearwater Station to standby. The pilot boat transfers the BFRS Emergency Medical personnel to the sailboat where the conscious patient is assessed.
“Within 45 minutes of first report, the patient is landed ashore at Emily’s Bay public dock and into the care of an ambulance crew for transport to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.”
