Relay For Life Luminaria Ceremony On May 13
Relay For Life of Bermuda’s Luminaria Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 13 at the National Sports Centre.
A spokesperson said, “The Luminaria Ceremony, held annually during the Relay For Life of Bermuda event, is a powerful tribute of remembrance and hope. It is a time to grieve for those we have lost, to reflect on our own or a loved one’s cancer experience, and to find hope that tomorrow holds the promise of a cancer-free world.
“This year’s Luminaria Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 13th at 9pm at the North Field, National Sports Centre. After the excitement that is Relay For Life kicks off and darkness sets in on the field, everyone in attendance will share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit around the track in remembrance of a life touched by cancer.

“Team activities and fundraisers pause, children stop playing as the walking track is lit up with hundreds of luminaria bags lovingly decorated with pictures, drawings, messages and names. Together survivors, participants, and attendees walk the track in silence and take in the personal and powerful messages displayed on each bag.
“No matter where you are in the world, you can share your support of a survivor, honour someone no longer with us, or let the community know your thoughts on cancer by purchasing a Luminaria bag to be displayed on the field. Bags can be purchased online at bermudarelay.com, at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, or from participating teams for a minimum donation of $10.
“At the time of purchase, you can decide to take your bag and decorate it yourself or choose to have Relay volunteers decorate the bag on your behalf with your personal message. Bags must be returned to the Centre no later than Wednesday, May 11th or directly to North Field, Friday, May 13th between 10am and 8am.
“At the field, dozens of volunteers will place the hundreds of luminaries around the track at the North Field, National Sports Centre in what promises to be a beautiful and inspiring ceremony. The bags will stay in place on the track until dawn. When a luminaria bag is purchased the donation helps Bermuda Cancer and Health’s mission to serve the community building healthier lives free of cancer and disease.
“All money raised during the Relay For Life event, including the sale of Luminaria, support the Centre’s Equal Access Fund which subsidises the cost of life-saving cancer screenings and radiation therapy to those who would otherwise be unable to afford care.
“Relay For Life of Bermuda is a fun-filled event that will be held on Friday May 13th beginning at 6:15 pm through 12:30 pm on Saturday, May 14th. Teams, survivors, supporters and the general public come together to participate in the Island’s largest fundraising event. Relay For Life bonds members of the community from all walks of life, as we unite in the fight against cancer.
