CAA: ‘Provided The Required Documentation’

April 28, 2022

“The Charities Commission is aware of CAA’s financial challenges, and we have provided the required documentation to them to restore our charity status,” the Centre Against Abuse said.

A spokesperson said, “Like many registered charities in Bermuda, Centre Against Abuse [CAA] has had financial challenges over the years. As a non-profit, we are not in the business of making a profit but ensuring that we provide the required services to our clients, and also making certain that we are being responsible with the funds that are provided to us by our generous donors.

“To this end, CAA have been sound financial stewards of all donations by adhering to our internal policies and procedures along with the requests of the donors. We also produce annual financials that are shared with our donors.

“The Charities Commission is aware of CAA’s financial challenges, and we have provided the required documentation to them to restore our charity status.

“Through our financial challenges, over the years CAA has consistently demonstrated our continued commitment to deliver our valuable services to those who need our assistance through the crisis times in their lives, and also via our awareness programmes locally and overseas.

“The Bermuda Government awarded CAA a grant to support the critical social services work we offer to Bermuda’s domestic abuse and sexual assault victims. To be clear, CAA has not received all of the funding from the Government and will not receive any additional funds from Government until the reinstatement of our charity status.

“CAA is operated by 1 full time employee, on-call counsellors, and 2 part-time staff members. Below is a snapshot of a portion of the services that CAA provided to our community during the past 3 years.

CAA Annual Stats 2019-2021

“For more than 40 years, CAA has provided 24/7 assistance for adult victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault through: counselling, safe housing, court advocacy, and many other vital programmes, that promotes safe and healthy relationships for thousands.

“We want the community to know that CAA remains committed to our mission to support the women, men and families affected by domestic abuse and sexual assault.

“We take this opportunity to thank our staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters of CAA who continue to work diligently with us. We also extend our gratitude to the charities and friends of CAA that have reached out to us to show their support for the essential services that we offer to our community.

“CAA’s mission is to provide services to adult survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault; and to deliver community awareness on these topics. Together we can create healthy relationships.”
