Cancer Survivors & Caregivers To Be Honoured
After a two-year virtual hiatus, local cancer survivors and their caregivers will once again take the celebratory first lap at the annual Relay For Life of Bermuda on May 13th at the National Sports Centre’s North Field with the event set to start at 6:15pm, with the Survivors’ Lap commencing at 6:30 pm.
A spokesperson explained, “Anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers are encouraged to join the celebration. As the survivors walk, participating teams and the general public will cheer them on in a demonstration of support and celebration. At the half way mark, the survivor’s carers meet them on the track and conclude the opening laps along their side.

“The American Cancer Society Relay For Life Mission statement sums it up best: “Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.” One of the most important aspects of Relay For Life is recognizing our Cancer Survivors and Caregivers. Their presence at the field gives us hope that our work is making an impact and a difference but it also reminds us that there’s much more work to be done.
“Every cancer survivor is encouraged to register in advance of Relay. Registered survivors will receive an email closer to the date letting them know how to collect their honourary Relay Survivor Sash and gift. Caregivers are also encouraged to pre-register. To register, visit bermudarelay.com under the Participate tab.
“Relay For Life of Bermuda is a community event where teams and the community come together to honour, celebrate, and raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. Of the money raised, 97% remains in Bermuda to support Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Equal Access Fund and 3% will help the American Cancer Society fund global cancer control initiatives in prevention, treatment and patient support that will help protect future generations.
“The Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event helping to save lives from cancer. Uniting communities across the globe, we celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.”
