May 6, 2022

[Updated - Event postponed until Thursday] The Bermuda Tourism Authority has partnered with the City of Hamilton to host SailGP Street Fest from 7pm to 10pm on Wednesday, May 11th,

A spokesperson said, “On Wednesday, May 11 the alfresco dining event will take over a Front Street block, bounded by Burnaby and Parliament Street, and will feature entertainment, vendors, community sailing clubs, boat displays, and a salute to Bermuda’s maritime heritage.”

Charles H. Jeffers II, Chief Executive Officer at the Bermuda Tourism Authority, said, “The island is buzzing with excitement as we countdown to the return of SailGP in Bermuda. SailGP will be bigger and better with exciting hospitality experiences for visitors and locals at the Cross Island Event Village.

“The SailGP Street Fest is an opportunity to engage our visitors at an event that fuses the excitement of SailGP racing, Bermuda’s rich history of ocean racing, and the unique Bermudian experiences that our visitors rave about.”

The spokesperson said, “While Front Street will be at the heart of the action, Hamilton Harbour will be the backdrop, brimming with boating activity throughout the event. The evening will start with the debut appearance of an F50 foiling across the harbour from SailGP newcomer, Team Canada. The Canadians will make the Front Yard venue their home base during the festivities.

“The Spirit of Bermuda will be cruising through Hamilton waters and is expected to mark the occasion with the firing of a cannon from the sloop. An exciting addition to the festivities will be the weekly Wednesday Night Fleet Racing repositioning its course from the Great Sound to start and end at the Front Street flagpole so that diners and pedestrians can enjoy the sailing competition.”

“Hamilton has a rich history as a maritime port dating back to our island’s early beginnings and we are proud to provide sponsorship support for this internationally-acclaimed event which pays tribute to that continued legacy.”

The spokesperson said, “Artifacts of Bermuda’s sail racing heritage will be featured courtesy of the local maritime community. Bermuda’s grassroots sailing clubs will present their comet class fleet, and attendees can enjoy displays of Bermuda’s fitted dinghy and the International One Design sailing vessels. The Bermuda Powerboat Association will also be onsite with a display of both the powerful Win Race Jr Boat and 28 Skater S22 vessels.

“Alfresco dining will be available at participating restaurants including Flanagan’s, Astwood Arms, Port O’ Call, Bermuda Bistro at the Beach and in anticipation of a surge in demand, reservations are strongly encouraged. Tables will be available on the street with live performances by Working Title Band and DJ Chubb. Vendors will be selling art, crafts, snacks, and desserts throughout the night, while Goslings will provide cocktails for festivalgoers.
