Temporary Partial Closure Of Cemetery Road
BELCO advised that there “will be a temporary partial closure of Cemetery Road between May 2, 2022, and July 1, 2022.”
A spokesperson said, “Eco Pest, TreeCon and CNC Automated Carpentry Ltd will be accessible by entering Cemetery Road from Serpentine Road and Gorham’s Lumberyard will be accessible by entering Cemetery Road from Woodlands Road.
“The road closure is related to the ongoing asset retirement project that includes the abatement of hazardous materials, the removal and disposal of retired assets and the demolition of buildings and structures related to the decommissioned generating assets that are no longer safe for usage.
“Cemetery Road will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of the public, contractors and BELCO staff during the dismantlement of the Old Power Station’s westernmost engine bays to create proper setbacks for the operation of large equipment and potential falling debris.
“The project officially began in September 2021, and demolition works are expected to be fully completed in March of 2023.”
BELCO President Wayne Caines said: “We continue to make good progress on our asset retirement project and while we understand this road closure may be an inconvenience to the public, it is necessary to ensure the health and safety of our team and the public which is of the utmost importance. We cemented our commitment to a sustainable energy future with the creation of our B100 team to develop and execute our plan to achieve Net Zero.
“At BELCO, we continue to strive to go above and beyond in terms of safety and service to the community. Everyone in Bermuda is a stakeholder on this journey and we appreciate your patience, understanding and support as we move forward with our work to meet our goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.”
