Congrats.Impressive. In the late 1970s the first book ever published re Gombeys had the Gombeys on its cover and the authors were asked if we had a culture : This is My Country. The authors later went on to develop the first Gombey Festival at Dellwood Primary School and a mini Bermuda Day Festival before it was officially named. At the same time the Gombeys were under attack as not being a part of our culture. They were rescued by the book produced by the late Louise Jackson and in 1998 the late David Allen took a lot of flack for using them in overseas marketing campaigns where they were a huge success. It has been a journey and finally we seem to have recognized their worth and value as part of our culture. But the period of their nearar demise should not be forgotten.
