Cricket: Waldron On Bermuda’s Preparations
Cal Waldron, the Bermuda interim coach, has backed his players to execute their game plans in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B matches in Uganda.
Bermuda face Kenya in their opening game in Kampala on Saturday, and Waldron, taking charge of the team for the first time, believes their preparations in East-Central Africa have helped them acclimate to the conditions.
“The prep has been good,” Waldon said. “We’ve had two practice games, so we’ve pretty much acclimatised to the conditions.
“We’ve readjusted our team goals and game plans based on those matches. Now it’s just about executing our game plans.
“We’ve formulated some ideas of how we want to play out here. If we stick to our targets and plans, we will be successful.”
Waldron added: “We’ve talked, reassured and given the players the confidence that they can play. It’s time for them to come out and execute.”
Malachi Jones, the experienced Bermuda all-rounder, echoed Waldron’s sentiments: “We’re focusing on our own game and personal disciplines whether that’s with the bat or the ball.”
Among the 14-man squad are newcomers such as Cameron Jeffers, Amari Ebbin, Jamar Stovel and Najiyah Raynor, with Kamau Leverock, the Bermuda captain, confident the youngsters will acquit themselves well in Uganda.
“We’re expecting to compete quite well,” Leverock said. “We have quite a young team and are integrating some new players. We’re looking to play well and steal a few games.”
It promises to be a hectic summer for Bermuda on the international stage, with the third and final leg of Challenge B to follow in Jersey in August.
Bermuda are bottom of League B after losing all but one of their opening 50-overs game in Oman in December 2019 – the other, against Kenya, was abandoned as a draw because of rain.
Uganda are top of the group after the first leg, having won all five of their matches.
