Bermuda Men’s World Amateur Team Announced

July 7, 2022

The Bermuda Golf Association has selected Jarryd Dillas, Will Haddrell and Damian Palanyandi to represent Bermuda at the 32nd Men’s World Amateur Team Championship – Eisenhower Trophy [WATC], to be played from August 31st to September 3rd at Le Golf National and Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Brèteche in Paris, France.

A spokesperson said, “Gary Burnet will accompany the team as non-playing captain and Adam Perry, the newly crowned Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play champion, has been named as the reserve player.

“Dillas, 36, will be making his record ninth appearance for Bermuda at the WATC. Dillas finished atop the 2022 Men’s National Order of Merit standings after placing in the top-3 in all but one of his 8 BGA events this past season, including winning the 2022 Bermuda Amateur Match Play and the 2021 Johnnie Walker Classic.

“Haddrell, 38, will be making his fourth appearance at the WATC after finishing second to Dillas in the season-long Order of Merit. Highlighted by winning the 2021 Bermuda Amateur Match Play last September, Haddrell placed in the top-3 in 5 of his 6 BGA events this season including a runner-up finish to Perry in the recent Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play.

“Palanyandi, 30, will be making his first appearance at the WATC after a successful 2021/22 campaign, which saw him make his PGA Tour debut after qualifying for the 2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Palanyandi won a total of 4 BGA events this season to finish third behind Dillas and Haddrell in the 2022 national rankings and is currently the leading amateur on the recently launched Moongate Tour series.”

BGA President, Craig Brown: “The Eisenhower Trophy is one of the showpiece events in the world of amateur golf and the association is pleased to be in a position to name such a strong team. Jarryd, Will and Damian are three of the island’s most decorated amateur players and I have every confidence that they will do Bermuda proud this summer.

“The International Golf Federation has indicated that the field size and qualification system for the World Amateur Team Championships will change in 2023, so I know the team has some lofty goals for France 2022 and that everyone is focused on achieving Bermuda’s best-ever finish at the Eisenhower.

“It’s also a special occasion because this will be Jarryd’s ninth time representing Bermuda at the WATC, which sees him move past Brendan “Bees” Ingham and Louis Moniz for the most all-time appearances by a Bermudian at the event.

“Jarryd became Bermuda’s youngest-ever Worlds participant in 2002 at the age of seventeen, so to see him make his ninth team some 20 years later is an incredible achievement and a testament to his continued dedication to competitive amateur golf.

“The association is also proud to name Adam Perry as the reserve player for the 2022 team. At just 19 years of age, Adam represents the future of Bermuda golf and is rightfully being rewarded for his great play over the past 12 months,” concluded Brown.

“The championships were last contested in 2018 in Maynooth, Ireland, with Denmark winning its first ever Eisenhower Trophy, and the Bermuda trio of Dillas, Walker Campbell and Mikus Ming placing 50th.”
