Covid-19: Premier Says 56 People In Hospital

July 17, 2022

[Updated] There are 56 people in hospital, Premier David Burt said in Parliament during a recent discussion on the Covid regulations.

This is the latest in what has been a steady increase in the past few weeks; there were 28 people in hospital on July 13th, 12 people in hospital on July 6th, and there were 5 people in hospital on June 29th.

Speaking during the recent session in the House of Assembly, the Premier Burt said, “This new strain that we have is infectious and far more dangerous than the earlier Omicron strains, and that’s why we’re seeing the level of hospitalization. I asked the Minister of Health earlier ‘How many people in the hospital?’ You want me to tell you, Mr Speaker… 56.”

20 second audio extract about the 56:

The pandemic is nowhere near over,” Minister of Health Kim Wilson previously said, noting that case numbers are rising and “there is an increase in people coming through the Emergency Department with the coronavirus, and hospital admissions have also risen.”

The Minister said, “We must keep doing our individual part to help stop the coronavirus spread for the benefit of the entire Bermuda community.

“Avoid closed spaces, crowded places and close contact settings. Wear a well-fitting mask. It is an effective form of personal protective equipment, which is easy, and everyone can do it.

“Also, practice good hand hygiene, and maintain physical distance. Importantly, ensure there is proper ventilation when you are indoors.”

Update 9.36pm: We asked the hospital for comment and a BHB spokesperson told Bernews, “Numbers of people with Covid-19 are increasing at BHB across our service lines, and we are seeing increasing numbers of people attending the Emergency Department due to Covid-19.

“The number of staff off with Covid or as close contacts of positive cases was 84 on Tuesday 14 and has been rising. The number was 54 on Wednesday 6 July. We remain at disaster level two right now, but certainly pressure on capacity in the acute care wards is increasing.

“With relation to the figures provided, 56 people on Friday would be consistent with our entire patient population, including acute care, critical care, and long term care across both KEMH and MWI. The figure of 28 from Government’s Wednesday update relates to the number of people in acute and critical care at KEMH only.”

  1. Brian Fog says:

How many vaccinated in the hospital? 56?

Time to stop discriminating against the unvaccinated.
The unvaccinated have had enough of your BS.

    • Incel says:

Exactly. Still wondering how we can’t know the ages of the deceased or the infected right now. But a few hours after a shooting we know the area of where it happened, the age, the gender, what parish he’s from, and if it’s non life threatening injuries… which means they’re in the hospital still.

But God forbid they tell us about a 99 year old woman from Sandy’s that tested positive. Their privacy will be protected.

      • Brian Fog says:

        One has to ask.
Why does the government restrict and massage important data they should be providing?
Why are they so intent on getting needles in arms when the ‘vaccine’ only has some kind of efficacy for 3-4 months?
Why will they not promote natural immunity for healthy people?
Why does an unvaccinated resident have to go through all the testing and do four days of quarantine on returning to the island?
How are they allowed to get away with all this?
        It’s oppression!

        • trufth says:

“How are they allowed to get away with this?”

          WE LET THEM.

    • Enough says:

Who cares whose vaccinated or unvaccinated!!! Everyone just need to stop already about the vaccine.
Are people still going get sick even being vaccinated yes absolutely! Are they dying even being vaccinated yes absolutely! But did vaccine help reduce deaths around the world yes absolutely!
The unvaccinated have they survived covid yes absolutely! Are they getting sick yes absolutely! Are they dying yes absolutely!

The point..Covid not going anywhere. Each person has their chose if want vaccine or not. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WITH EVERYONE COMPLAINING COMPLAINING COMPLAINING!!!!!!!

      • Burtcoin says:

You are absolutely right! Here”s the point that your missing. The problem is that governments and health organization won’t let us get on with it!! It was obvious from the beginning and more blatantly obvious now as this continues. Thats why we’re still complaining. It’s control without justification… Also called opression! Get it??

    • Joe Bloggs says:

“Time to stop discriminating against the unvaccinated.”

Where in the Premier’s speech did he differentiate between vaccinated and unvaccinated people?

      • Brian Fog says:

I did not watch the Premier’s speech. The discrimination is in his actions. Not allowing unvaccinated visitors and putting Bermuda’s unvaccinated residents through a lot of unnecessary testing and quarantine to return home, for example.

  2. Ringmaster says:

The new strain has to be imported, but how, when we’re told that the TAF is there to stop it? Caught out lying by facts. Where is the breakdown by age etc? All this fear mongering is counterproductive as no one will listen any more.
Does the Premier or an MP have to complete a TAF? If not why not and if not no wonder Dim Wilson thinks the process is stress free. She’s never been through it.

    • question says:

The TAF is nothing more than a mechanism to line certain pockets.
It would be interesting to find out (although I think we know the answer) whether MPs have to go through the same process, waiting in line on the phone for two hours to get through.

  3. Covid 2030 says:

I predict that this will be with us for the foreseeable future. All stores have no one to ensure hands are sanitized or the sanitizer is not working. No social distancing enforced and on and on it goes. There are people that believe there is no Covid. Also if someone dies from a heart attack and have covid it is thought we are told covid killed them. I guess they also believe trump won. Anyway my people covid is not going anywhere anytime soon. We may be tired of covid but don’t let your guard down because you may not think covid is real until it gets you or a loved one, then it maybe too late.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

” We may be tired of covid but don’t let your guard down because you may not think covid is real until it gets you or a loved one, then it maybe too late”

That is all true. I am double vaccinated and I have had my booster and still I managed to acquire COVID last month. It was MUCH more than “just a cold”. It was 10 days I would prefer not to relive.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

Does anyone pay attention to the Minister anymore?

Give some pertinent information & maybe she will be worth listening to.

Of those in hospital how many are vaxed, boosted vaxed? How many are not?

Of the deaths, what are the ages? How many had existing issues?

    • comfortably numb says:

Trust me, she won’t have that information at hand!

  5. Ouch says:

The comments above are painful because they express no interest in the process to keep us safe. OK. Lets spend the time and give the public the exact things mentioned above. Will it make a difference? No. Time to move from a destructive negative track to a more helping one. Or ask them to move out of the way and youu show us. All services are stretched and you want more and more details that will not save a life. A waste of time.

    • Burtcoin says:

This is all BS. Bda day went ahead as planned anD so will cupmatch. So let’s just stop with all the safety BS can we??? Stadiums , concerts and events etc are going on all around the world without restrictions. You can board a plane for 12hr flight without restrictions.. so please…… Can we just stop pushing the BS narrative and fear mongering?? It’s getting old

      • Brian Fog says:

I don’t think Bermuda will ever pull out of this Covid nonsense. Walking around, it looks more and more like people have bought into the narrative and somewhat enjoy the oppression.

        • Joe Bloggs says:

“I don’t think Bermuda will ever pull out of this Covid nonsense.”

I don’t think the WORLD will pull out of this COVID-19 pandemic in my lifetime.

COVID-19 should not be a political football to kick around or a political club with which to beat politicians with whom you disagree. COVID-19 is a danger and a fact of life. We need to learn to live with as best we can.

  6. Question says:

The TA form is tyranny. We should rise up.

  7. Question says:

56 people WITH covid. How many were admitted FOR covid? In the UK, two thirds of hospital patients with covid were admitted for something else. Here, they never tell us that statistic.
Got to keep the fear up, or they won’t be able to string out the tyrannical TA form.
