Local dignitaries greeted the U.S. Coast Guard tall ship ‘Eagle’ as it arrived in Bermuda today [July 8], and while the Eagle has visited the island before, this time it sailed in under the command of Captain Jessica Rozzi-Ochs, the Eagle’s first female Commanding Officer.

Captain Rozzi-Ochs was officially appointed last month, becoming the 30th skipper of the Eagle, which is a 295-foot, three-masted barque, and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service.

Government House said, “This morning, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Eagle arrived in Bermuda for a short stopover. The Governor, joined by the Deputy Governor, the US Consul General, and the Minister of Transport, were transferred to USCGC Eagle by the Bermuda Pilot Boat St. David to ‘ride-in’ to Hamilton Harbour.

“While aboard, the Governor had the opportunity to interact with USCG cadets from the Coast Guard Academy to learn more about their experience on the sail-training vessel.

“The Eagle, also known by its nickname “America’s Tall Ship”, is the flagship of the United States Coast Guard and is the only active-duty sailing vessel in America’s Military.

“The Eagle is currently commanded by Captain Jessica Rozzi-Ochs, the Eagle’s first female and 30th overall Commanding Officer, and carries an average complement of 12 officers, 68 crew, and up to 150 trainees.”
