Football Teams To Compete In Northern Ireland
Two of the International Development Academy Bermuda select teams departed Bermuda on Tuesday [July 19] bound for Northern Ireland where they will compete in the Super Cup NI tournament.
A spokesperson said, “The event, previously known as the Milk Cup and established in 1983, has grown to become one of the best youth tournaments in the world. The matches are played across a number of towns and venues, based largely around the country’s scenic north coast.
“Some notable alumni who have previously participated in the event include:
- Harry Kane [Tottenham Hotspur]
- Sergio Busquets [Barcelona]
- Joe Cole [West Ham]
- Ryan Giggs [Manchester United]
- Stephen McMaanaman [Liverpool]
- Wayne Rooney [Everton]
- Marcus Rashford [Manchester United]
- David Beckham [Manchester United]
“Bermuda will be represented by the IDA Select teams in the U14, U16 & U18 divisions, featuring many of our top youth players from club and the national academy programs. The U14 team will depart Bermuda on July 21, 2022 to join up with the U16 & U18 teams who have already checked into the tournament accommodations at Ulster University and begun final training preparations.
“This year sees the return of the tournament after an absence of two years due to the covid pandemic, with top programs participating throughout the age groups including:
- Newcastle City Juniors [England], Ballymena United [Northern Ireland], Surf select [USA], Charlton Athletic [England] – U14s
- Manchester United [England], Leeds United [England], Atlante [Mexico], Rangers FC [Scotland] – U16s
- Vende [France], Club Puebla [Mexico], Ipswich Town [England], Plymouth Argyle [England], San Francisco Glens [USA] – U18s
“Tournament play begins on Monday July 25,2022 and each team is guaranteed five matches with various divisional championships contested after group play. The IDA Bermuda teams will be playing warmup matches against Northern Ireland county select and Surf USA teams over the next few days to tune up for the competition.
“Supporters can follow the teams’ results and progress via the tournament website www.supercupni.com and view some of the IDA Bermuda matches via the tournament streaming service www.supercupni.tv. Regular updates will be posted during the leadup and into the tournament on the IDA Bermuda Supercup 2022 Facebook page.
