Minister: We Want A Peaceful & Safe Cup Match

July 24, 2022

“As Cup Match approaches, we anticipate that there will be increased excitement and activity as we prepare for a long weekend of events. However, as we enjoy ourselves, it’s important to engage in responsible behaviour and think of the health and safety of others,” said the Minister of National Security Michael Weeks in advance of the busy holiday period.

Minister Weeks stressed that he hopes “residents will make good choices and cautioned that there will be a visible presence of Police and other uniformed services over the holiday period to ensure public safety.”

The Minister continued, “While I understand that many residents will be in and around the water in celebration, I urge mariners to refrain from drinking and driving, and to be considerate of other boat operators and homes near the water when playing music – especially late at night. And for those who will be on our roads, if you’re going to drink, please have a designated driver – don’t drive.

“The Bermuda Police Service has produced a robust policing plan and will be working in partnership with the Bermuda Reserve Police and the Royal Bermuda Regiment to ensure a proportionate response to multiple major events, including Cup Match, Beach Fest and other planned night-time events. Additionally the Coast Guard will be monitoring all on-water activities.”

A spokesperson said, “The public is reminded that the annual Cup Match Classic gets underway at 10am on Thursday and Friday at the Somerset Cricket Club. Thousands of people are expected to attend the signature sporting event over the two days, and Police will be highly visible during both days of the match. It is expected that the Bermuda Police Service [BPS] will provide further details of their Cup Match Policing Plan later this week.”

Minister Weeks concluded, “We simply want to ensure a peaceful and safe Cup Match holiday, one that is not marred by a serious incident or tragedy. So, we thank the public for their consideration as we head into this celebratory period, and on behalf of the Ministry of National Security, I wish everyone a memorable Cup Match holiday.”

We are in a very sorry state of affairs when a Minister has to beg for good behavior over a big holiday weekend.

I think it’s been pretty much standard fare to have the Minister of the day do the whole “Cup Match – don’t act up, don’t drive drunk” message for many years now.
