BELCO: Smiths Parish Trenching Advisory

August 13, 2022

BELCO advised that crews will be continuing work on Harrington Sound Road in Smith’s from August 15 to September 9.

A spokesperson said, “The work in Smiths involves opening up holes to pull cables through the newly installed conduits and there will be a temporary single lane road closure. Work will take place between the hours of 9:00am to 6:00pm and traffic control measures will be in place. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes on North Shore Road or South Road while the work takes place.

“As part of the transmission upgrade project, BELCO is replacing 40% of its current underground transmission cables that are over 50 years old. Nearly 25% of our cables have served Bermuda for over 60 years. These cables and other transmission and distribution assets are well beyond their useful lifespans, causing a higher number of faults, system vulnerability and higher maintenance costs.

“The public is encouraged to check the trenching updates and information including advisories for road users on BELCO’s website at belco.bm

BELCO President Wayne Caines said: “We are acutely aware that our ongoing infrastructure upgrades are causing inconvenience and frustration for the public.

“We would ask for your patience and understanding as these critical trenching projects will ensure a more robust transmission network that will support the addition of renewables as we transition to a sustainable energy future and work to meet our goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.”
