Dame Flora Duffy came second in her match in the Collins Cup – triathlon’s answer to golf’s Ryder Cup.
Duffy, representing Team International, faced Daniela Ryf, of Team Europe, and Sarah True, of Team USA in the opening match at the X-Bionic Sphere in Bratislava, Slovakia, yesterday.
The Bermudian led the swim with the fastest time of the day (25min 33sec) but Ryf took control during the bike and stretched her advantage on the run.
Duffy stayed well ahead of third-place True to claim a bonus point for her team.
She wrote on Instagram: “It was a tough day out there for me, but I’m glad to have finally completed a long-course race, and I learnt a lot. Had a lot of fun with my Team International teammates. Lots of laughs throughout the week.
“Thanks to everyone for the cheers out there. I’ll be back for some more long course and hopefully, be a little better.”
Team Europe, who won eight of the 12 matches, won the event with 53 points, with Team International coming second with 38 points and Team USA finishing third with 22.5 points.
There were six women’s races and six men’s races, each featuring one athlete from each team.
Each race consisted of a 2km swim, 80km bike and 18km run.
