Dame Flora Duffy finished sixth in the elite women’s race in the inaugural PTO US Open in Dallas yesterday.

Duffy came out of the water in the 2,000-metre swim as part of a large chase pack behind Louise Charles-Barclay, of Britain, including Perez Sala, of Spain, Paula Findlay, of Canada, Katrina Matthews, of Britain, and Australian Ashleigh Gentle.

On the 80-km bike, Duffy was also in the first chase pack behind Charles-Barclay and Taylor Knibb, of the United States, along with Holly Lawrence, of Britain, Lisa Norden, of Sweden, and Findlay.

Knibb pulled away, arriving in T2 3 mins. 47 secs. ahead of Charles-Barclay and more than six minutes ahead of Lawrence, Duffy, Findlay and Norden.

Duffy made an impressive start to the 18-km run, finding her rhythm in third place and was running at a quicker pace than Knibb and Charles-Barclay.

The in-form Gentle overtook Duffy at the 5-km mark, with the Bermudian falling behind Norden and finishing in sixth place in the strongest women’s field the Professional Triathlon Organisation Pro Tour has seen.

Knibb could not hold onto her lead, however, with Gentle taking the lead with a few kilometres remaining to claim the $100,000 winners’ cheque with a winning time of 3:37:17. Duffy finished in 3:45:17.
