Pre-Labour Day First Sunday Spiritual Gathering

September 1, 2022

The  Bermudian Bahá’í community is inviting the public “to its contribution to Bermuda’s Labour Day, honoring and recognizing all our laborers, workers, and employees throughout Bermuda. ”

A spokesperson said, “Forty years ago, on the first Monday in September 1982, Bermuda observed its very first Labour Day public holiday. In the United States, Labour Day was first observed in 1882 organized by a group of workers who sacrificed their wages to raise awareness of unsafe and inhumane working conditions in New York City; eventually other labour organizations followed their lead and petitioned state legislatures to declare the day a public holiday in 1894.

“Here in Bermuda, it was the island’s largest and most popular trade union, the Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] which led the call for our Island community to have a Labour Day holiday.

“At its monthly First Sunday Spiritual Gathering at the Bahá’í National Centre, 8 Brunswick Street, at 11:15am the Bermudian Bahá’í community lovingly invites the public to its contribution to Bermuda’s Labour Day, honoring and recognizing all our laborers, workers, and employees throughout Bermuda.

“One of Bermuda’s renowned attributes is service as a service-oriented island, service in diverse professions: Hospitality, Education, Health, Social Work, Construction, Arts & Crafts, Agriculture, Fishing, Retail, Public Administration, Transport, Communication, Restaurants, Real Estate, International Business, Clerical, just to site a few of the categories of work. We applaud All!

“The teachings of the Bahá’í Faith extol work and workers, and ‘Work as Worship’. In one of His writings, Baháʼu’lláh, the Prophet-Founder of the Bahá’í Faith, writes:

“It is made incumbent on every one of you to engage in some occupation, such as arts, trades, and the like. We have made this—your occupation—identical with the worship of God, the True One. Reflect, O people, upon the Mercy of God and upon His favors, then thank Him in mornings and evenings.”

“And in another place He writes: “In the Bahá’í Cause arts, sciences and all craft are [counted as] worship…Briefly, all effort and exertion put forth by man from the fullness of his heart is worship, if it is prompted by the highest motives and the will to do service to humanity. This is worship: to serve mankind and to minister to the needs of the people. Service is prayer…”

“Our Spiritual Gathering programme invites inter-faith prayers and will incorporate the teachings of the Bahá’í Faith as they relate to “Work as Worship”. Light refreshments will follow the programme, and we encourage you to observe the Covid related prevention protocols which are still needed.”
