Gary Powers Jr To Speak At Somersfield

Francis “Gary” Powers Jr will visit Somersfield Academy as a guest speaker and educate senior students as part of their individuals and societies studies.

Mr Powers, who lectures internationally and appears regularly on C-SPAN, the History, Discovery and A&E television channels, will deliver his talk at the Devonshire school at 2.15 pm on Wednesday, September 28.

He is the son of Francis Gary Powers Sr, the U-2 pilot whose plane was shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission over the Soviet Union in 1960, triggering an international incident during the Cold War.

In 2015, Mr Powers consulted on Bridge of Spies, a Cold War thriller directed by Steven Spielberg, a film about James Donovan, an American lawyer who brokered the 1962 spy exchange between KGB spy Rudolph Abel and Francis Gary Powers Sr.
