Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2nd Round
The second round of the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship was held at the Port Royal Golf Course, Southampton, yesterday [Oct 28].
A spokesperson said, “The second round of the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship was suspended by darkness at 7:01 p.m. with Jarryd Dillas and Tano Goya left to finish at Port Royal Golf Course, Southampton today. The second round will finish tomorrow morning at 9:15 a.m. and the third round will then begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. with players going off split tees in threesomes. The cut line will be at -6.
“Saturday’s third round is Family Day presented by Butterfield and Mastercard.”
Leader in the Clubhouse
“Ben Crane [-14, 128] is the leader at the halfway point of the tournament, setting a new tournament record for low 36-hole scoring with rounds of 66-62. The previous low 36-hole record was -11, 131, set by Harry Higgs, Brendon Todd and Scottie Scheffler in 2019 and tied by Taylor Pendrith last year.
“Crane, who started on #10, carded nine birdies and an eagle to go with two bogeys. He also tied the tournament record for lowest front nine score with a 29, carding five birdies and an eagle from Holes 1-7.
“First round leader Austin Smotherman, Adam Schenk, Aaron Baddeley, Robby Shelton and Ben Griffin are all in a five-way tie for 2nd place at -13, 129, one stroke behind Crane.
“Two strokes back of the lead are Seamus Power, Kevin Yu, Zecheng Dou, Dylan Wu and Nico Echavarria, all at -12, 130.”

“Jarryd Dillas will finish his round Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. but will miss the cut. His opening round 69 was the lowest score posted by a Bermudian competing in the tournament historically. Fellow Bermudians Nick Jones [+5, 71-76=147] Michael Sims [+1, 73-70=143] and Kim Swan [+28, 89-81=170] all competed but will not make the weekend.
Former Champ in the Field
“2020 Butterfield Bermuda Championship winner Brian Gay shot a -5, 66 to sit four shots back at -10, 66-66=132. Playing in every tournament so far, he has now posted rounds under-par in 13 of his 14 rounds with a lone 75 in the first round of 2021.
Déjà Vu All Over Again
“Brian Gay will be one of only four players to have made the cut in every Butterfield Bermuda Championship. He is joined in the club by Russell Knox, Denny McCarthy and Seamus Power.
Field Update
“Tommy Gainey withdrew after the first round. He opened with a +1, 72.
Saturday is Family Day
“Saturday’s third round is Family Day presented by Butterfield and Mastercard. There will also be live entertainment from Devils Isles Audio at the Goslings Fan Oasis from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
