Joint Statement In Support Of Julian Assange

October 12, 2022

Julian Assange October 2022A joint statement has been signed by a number of local personalities in support “for those who campaigned at Westminster in London on October 8, 2022 to prevent the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States.”

The statement says, “We, the undersigned, join in our support for those who campaigned at Westminster in London on October 8, 2022 to prevent the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States. As the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnes Callamard, explained, ‘Assange must never be extradited to the U.S. It’s a serious threat to him personally and freedoms that we usually honour, such as press freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of information.’

“The Chairperson of the Commission for Human Rights, Council of Europe, Dunja Mijavotic, said, ‘Julian Assange’s potential extradition has human rights implications that reach far beyond his individual case’.

“Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture; Human Rights Chair – Geneva Academy; Professor of International Law – University of Glasgow – said, ‘This case is a huge scandal and represents a failure of Western rule of law. If Julian Assange is convicted, it will be a death sentence for freedom of the press’.

“Daniel Ellesberg, the iconic whistle blower who released the Pentagon Papers exposing the U.S. Vietnam War’s gross malpractice, said, ‘The treatment of Julian Assange poses a threat to American press freedom – with international implications – and democracy itself’.

“Our signatures represent an act of solidarity with this global effort, not in terms of a personality, but in support of a fundamental principal that has implications for the whole human family.
