Latest Bermuda Softball League Match Reports
In women’s action, Western Stars Angels and Rainbows are heading toward another showdown as they annihilated their opponents in Tournament play. Rainbows batted around in the 1st inning scoring 4 runs while Hardknockz scored their only 3 runs in the bottom half of the 1st inning. Rainbows went on to plate 17 additional runs and forced an early night for Hardknockz by way of the 15-run mercy rule with a final score of 21 – 3. Adrienne Smatt [3 for 4 – 3rbi] and Bitsy Earl [2 for 4 – 3rbi] led Rainbows’ attack while Vanessa Paulos [2 for 3 – 1d, 1rbi] was the best of Hardknockz as they were only able to muster 5 total hits!
Western Stars Angels had things their own way as they defeated PHC Zebras 18 – 8. Angels had a big 4th inning scoring 9 runs which put the game out of reach for Zebras. Topping the bating statistics for Angels was Terry Paynter [3 for 4 – 1d, 3rbi] while Nina Webb, Debbie DeShields and Rose Saunders all contributed with 2rbi each. Devre Evans and Tahirah Hill had 2rbi each in a losing effort.
In A Division action, Moongate Brewers outlasted Paraquet Flyers 11 – 9. Brewers scored 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning including a 3-run blast by Terence Corday and never relinquished the lead. Flyers’ Jorgito Castellanos had a 3-run shot of his own in the bottom of the 5th inning to half the score to 10 – 5 and he belted a 2-run shot in the 7th inning representing Flyers’ final runs. Pitcher, Paulo Arruda, got Joe Torres to ground into a fielder’s choice at third base to end the Flyers threat of a comeback. Corday [2 for 5 – 1hr, 4rbi] and Gary Adams [2 for 4 – 1hr, 2rbi] were top batters for Brewers while Castellanos [3 for 4 – 2hr, 5rbi] and Steve O’Flynn [4 for 4 – 3rbi] were impressive for Flyers.
Blue Wahoos outdueled X-Bats 20 – 19 in a real nail biter. Wahoos’ Shane Matchett hit a decisive grand slam in the top of the 6th inning and Kevin Albrecht singled in Will Tyrrell from second base with what proved to be the winning run. X-Bats had their chances as Brett Farlow blasted a 3-run shot in the 6th inning and another in the 7th inning with no outs to pull within a run and thereafter X-Bats loaded the bases. However, Tyrrell was able to sit them down in order to nullify the threat. Matchett and Jeremy Estey had 4rbi each and Albrecht chipped in with 3rbi for the victors. Farlow [3 for 5 – 3hr, 7rbi] and Daniel Andrade [5rbi] led the line for X-Bats.
In B Division action, Team Smokey continued their dominance defeating Hakuna Matata Lions 20 – 15. Lions scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th innings highlighted by Preston Mallory’s 3-run homer to lead 13 – 9. However, they could not stymie Team Smokey’s offense as they rattled off 6 runs in the 6th inning and 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning including a 3-run dinger by Eugene Dyer to put the game out of reach. Dyer [4 for 4 – 2hr, 5rbi] and Devin Saltus [4 for 5 – 3rbi] were top batters for Team Smokey while Mallory [3rbi] and Aaron Bloom [3rbi] were tops in a losing cause.
In C Division action, Corporation of Hamilton [“CoH”] outlasted Super Express 22 – 21in a marathon game that lasted nearly two hours! Time [90mins] had elapsed at the end of the 5th inning with the score tied at 15 and it took two extra innings to separate these two combatants. In the top of the 7th inning, CoH plated 4 runs with the final run coming from an overthrow that saw Jamal Warren race home from third base with what would be the winning run. Super Express’ T’Zadk Donville blasted a 3-run shot in the bottom of the inning to pull with a run. However, with bases loaded, big hitter, Garic Swainson, popped up to left field to end the match and give CoH the narrowest of victories.
In D Division action, Oddballs out-powered Killawhat 19 – 16. Killawhat lead 12 – 4 after two inning behind a Jarrew Daniels grand-slam. However, Oddballs’ offense exploded in the 3rd inning as they scored 11 runs highlighted by a 3-run blast by Tyler Bordelleau to take the lead 15 – 12. Killawhat responded with 4 runs in the 4th inning including a 2-run shot by George Fubler. They were matched in the bottom of the inning where Oddballs scored their final runs. Killawhat could not add to their tally in the top of the 5th inning as they were sat down in order. Bordelleau [4 for 4 – 1hr, 1d, 7rbi] lead all batters ably assisted by Sivannah Stafford [2 for 3 – 3rbi]. Daniels [4rbi] and Christopher Medrano [4 for 4 – 1d, 3rbi] were the standouts for Killawhat.
