Day For Elimination Of Violence Against Women

“In observance of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which starts on Friday, November 25th, I will UNiTE in solidarity with women from the public and private sectors who are activists for the prevention of violence against women and girls.” said the Minister of Social Development and Seniors Tinee Furbert.

“Between noon and 3:15 pm, we will be located at the Lower Level of the Washington Mall near the Washington Lane entrance/exit to raise awareness of gender-based violence, provide information about helping agencies, and hand out orange ribbons to represent a bright future, free from violence against women and girls.”

Minister Furbert said, “The UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is centered around 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which concludes on the 10th December – Human Rights Day. This year’s theme is “UNiTE! Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls”.

“We must work together to end all forms of violence against women and girls. During the next 16 days, I encourage you to get involved in combating gender-based violence, for example:-

• become a volunteer at a helping agency
• start a support group
• educate yourself on the root cause of gender-based violence
• interrupt or stop using sexist and discriminatory language
• teach the next generation about gender, respect and human rights
• learn about the signs of abuse and how you can help
• start a conversation about gender-based violence either on your social media platform, chat groups etc.
• donate to organizations that support survivors and empower women and girls

Minister Furbert concluded, “The Government remains committed to improving and safeguarding the lives of women and girls to ensure Bermuda remains compliant with the monitoring and reporting measure to uphold the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women [CEDAW], which was extended to Bermuda in 2017.”

“As a community, we must become less judgmental of victims of gender-based violence and focus on being more supportive. We must empower these women and girls with the skills and tools required to heal.”

“Violence against women knows no geographical boundary, age limit or colour bar, and affects every type of family relationship and social class. There should not be any excuse or immunity for perpetrators of violence against women and girls. Talking about victimization doesn’t end victimization. People need to intervene. As parents, we must be role models for our children and teach them that violence is unacceptable. We must all come together collectively to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence and harassment against women and girls.”
