Dec 17: Dignity House Christmas Charity Event
Dignity House will be holding their first Christmas charity event on Saturday [Dec 17] from 7.00pm to 1.00am at Argus Hub.
Entry costs $75 per person, with all proceeds going toward the Dignity Foundation.
A spokesperson said, “Our vision is to support persons in the community who have mental health challenges, engage in rehabilitation services to improve their quality of life and reduce the number of multiple re-admissions to hospital. An increased quality of life will encourage personal stability, better family engagement and will reintroduce the person back into the workforce or in an area of their greatest mental capacity.
Our Philosophy
“The intent of the Foundation is to assist all those who have a diagnosed mental health challenge – whether they be insured, underinsured or uninsured and to give them all the tools possible for effective rehabilitation. There are varied therapies, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy [BDT], Cognitive Behavioral Therapy [CBT, Recreational Behavior Therapy [RBT] as well as Occupational Therapy [OT] at the disposal of staff at Dignity House for treatment of these clients and they have been very effective.
“These therapies are tools that will require tangible items to support mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, cognition, emotion and behaviour.
“The successful use of DBT, CBT, RBT and OBT have a substantial positive public benefit. Clients diagnosed with their previous mental challenges can now re-join the workforce in a manner that they were once accustomed to. Clients can and do return to the best of their former selves and engage in family reunification, which is also a public benefit. These clients are examples to the community that mental health can be treated and it is nothing to be ashamed of.
“At this present moment, there is no other charitable organization that is looking at the holistic treatment of clients diagnosed with a mental health challenge, which offers an amazing outcome for the clients. Dignity Foundation is looking to bridge the gap in the treatments and options available to those vulnerable and in need of these type of services.
The importance of Dignity Foundation
“As we well know, those who suffer from mental health challenges are often uninsured, underinsured and live in poor housing condition. The intent of Dignity Foundation is to be able to offer our clients a haven, an opportunity to regroup, and tools to rehabilitate themselves to the point where they practice good mental health, as is evidenced by the reduction in hospitalization and a return to their former selves.
“Providing this type of support during their rehabilitation is a valuable way to invest in our community.
“Through our ongoing efforts with government entities, companies in the community, in schools, we will be working very hard to change the mind set regarding the stigma and discrimination of ‘mental illness’ in the hope of decreasing it within the community.
“The foundation through its profile raising activities within the community will promote and hopefully increase the understanding of the immense need for mental health rehabilitation on the island.
“The above-mentioned therapies that are available to clients are offered to them within several programmes: a day programme, a residential rehabilitation programme and an outpatient rehabilitation programme. These programmes are focused on providing a therapeutic environment where the clients can thrive and offers them the tools needed to enhance the rehabilitation skills that they learn.
Our Plan of Action
“The Foundation’s paramount focus is to be able to offer all of our clients the tools and ability to recover and empower them to go back and face their former life and any challenges they had, and to have them be able to have a long term, improved sense of self-worth and their own abilities.
Who Can Assist?
“Clients will be eligible to become a Dignity Foundation client through several avenues: a professional referral [MWI, psychologist, Dr, etc.,] a family request or a personal request. Vetting processes will be carried out by the Dignity Foundation Board to confirm the dire need. We know of several clients who would greatly benefit from this support.
“The Dignity Foundation Board will be playing an ongoing supportive role in reference to all the clients at Dignity House and those outside of that remit.”
